Every red-blooded male has to love Flash Gordon a little if for no other reason than Ornella Muti, in her red skin-tight jumpsuit spread-eagle on a table.

If you like anything with Kevin Sorbo in it, then you have no doubt seen the abomination that was made from my script of KULL THE CONQUEROR. It started out embracing the dark, moody, blood and thunder prose poetry of R. E. Howard, but ended up Red Sonja...a rolling juggernaut of illogic, bad wigs, and hodge-podge costuming.

Don't have that many guilty pleasure movies that I think of of the top of my head...though I can watch almost any Western or any swashbuckler no matter how bad. And those Italian Mythological things from the sixties.

When I'm back in Lexington, a trip wouldn't be complete without indulging in a movie night with Eric Johnson and Roger Leasor, viewing one of Leasor's truly bad horror epics...like The Seven Hopping Vampires or Santos the masked Mexican wrestler who combats supernatural evil. Of course, sometimes Rog lets us watch something really good too...like Mario Bava!

I am also addicted to a little movie called TAPEHEADS with John Cusack and Tim Robbins and the ever-bizarre Susan Tyrell and Clu Gulagar, with a great song, Any Ordinary Man Would Have Given It Up By Now, sung by the Swanky Modes (actually Sam of Sam and Dave and Junior Walker of Junior Walker and the All-Stars...groups all before your time).

timxx said...

"Shotgun"? "Soul Man"?
Possibly before my time BUT I certainly know of whom you speak...and music affecianados (sp?) from the 80's know that Jr. Walker played that killer sax solo on Foriegner's URGENT from "Foreigner 4"

Anonymous said...

wait, wait, which version of in the city? the eagles, or joe walsh's solo version, recorded for the movie, "the warriors"? walsh's version pre-dates the eagles, and I know, like you will point out, that walsh was in the eagles, but they re-cut the song for the long run album.

*Superman II - I've seen this dozens of times. Terrance Stamp's "Come to me son of Jor-El! Kneel before Zod!" is a thing of beauty. Great Family Guy bit the other night about "What was that cellophane thing Superman peels off his chest to throw at one of the bad guys in Superman II?"

* The Commitments - Again, dozens of times. "And you, George Michael, you call me a fookin' eejit again you'll go home with a drumstick rammed up your hole... The one you don't sing out of... I'm tellin' ya it's comin'. So keep your Vaseline handy."

Hey. These aren't really "guilty pleasures" (which I believe is what the X man is wanting). I need to think about this a bit and dig up the really embarassing stuff.

timxx said...

Oh oh, sk...Fletch has a point, and one I had forgotten about, particularly as one of MY guilty pleasures (and one of Rick8's I do believe) pertains to the film in question...Sooooo...while I'm gonna give you your 3 and let you take away his 3, I'll also give HIM 3, thus negating the takeaway!!!
(Good save, dude...)
Now ALL OF YOU- KNEEL before Zod!!!!!

timxx said...

When you mention Irwin Allen, are you actually SUGGESTING that THE POSIEDIN ADVENTURE and THE TOWERING INFERNO are not MASTERPIECES!?????!!!
"You wanna take somebody???TAKE ME!!!!!!!"
Now EARTHQUAKE- THERE'S a bad disaster movie...didn't Ava Gardner play Charlton Heston's DAUGHTER????WTF?????

Anonymous said...

Hmmm...I think ya'll could use a little estrogen in here and if u admit that one of these bea-utes is one of your guilty pleasures...then it MIGHT be embarrassing

How about SHAG? The ridiculous 60's retro film starring the lovely Phoebe Cates and Bridget Fonda "Ya'll are just WAY out of control!!!" One of my favorites and what I am guilty about is my ability to quote it!

How about SOMEWHERE IN TIME? Christopher Reeve falling in love with Jane Seymour after using self-hypnosis to travel in time...chick flick-o-rama!!!

Or the GOOONIES...I love Chunk... and the monster "Baby Ruuuu-uuuth"

Ohhhh and SHOWGIRLS is so ridiculous, you gotta love it. When Elisabeth Berkely pulls the knife on the guy in the truck....fabulous!

timxx said...

Mmmmm...SHAG also starred the lovely Ms Anabeth Gish....in her pre X files daze, no less....

I wouldn't be too embarassed to admit how many times I've watched Polanki's The Tenant just to see him throw himself out the window in drag, crash through the glass atrium, then crawl back upstairs to do it again. This flic also has a macabre turn by Shelly Winters as the creepy concierge. Who cares how much I love Altman's Three Sisters with Shelly Duval, Mommie Dearest or the Count Yorga, Vampire series.

Wouldn't it be really tragic if I confessed to watching films on the Lifetime (Boo-hoo, he done her wrong)Movie Channel? Who wouldn't switch channels before answering the door or hitting the mute button before answering the phone during a Tori Spelling Weekend or a Yasmine Bleeth Film Festival?

OK, I'm not saying I don't watch any bad movies. I'm just not ashamed to admit to any of them. I'm not like Lito who watches (i.e. collects) Kung-Fu theatre and *anything* Stallone. Here's a few taht *might* make the occasional stuffy person cringe.

* Vision Quest - Good 80's stuff. sPeaking of which...

* Karate Kid (the first one) - Mmmmm... Elisabeth Shue.

* Rocky 3 and 4 - Sing it with me: "You're the best.. around... Nothin' gonna ever bring you down."

Of course, all of the above have that de rigeur training montage in common. Child of the 80's I am.

* Wild Things - Kevin Bacon, Matt Dillon, Neve Campbell, Denise Richards *and* RENT's Daphne Rubin-Vega. I can't quite put my finger on *why* I like it.

* Romancing the Stone - "I shoulda listened to my mother and become a cosmetic surgeon. I'd be making $100,000 a year and up to my neck in tits and ass." ... "Oh... you mean Pepe. My little mule."

* Back to the Future (first one) - "Hey you... get your damn hands off of her!" ... "Last night Darth Vader came down from planet Vulcan and told me if I don't ask her to the Under the Sea Dance he'd melt my brain." ... "I'm sorry boys, but you're just too damn loud."

* Happy Gilmore - "You eat pieces of shit for breakfast?"... "Yeah. And Grizzly Adams had a beard."

* Pee-Wee's Big Adventure - "The stars at night are big and bright..."

Once upon a time I would've listed anything with Shannon Tweed. You know what I mean.

timxx said...

Ah yes...AIRPORT- the first movie I ever saw in a movie theatre! i'll never forget George Kennedy hollering "HANG ON- WE'RE GOING FOR BROKE!!!!" Ah, they don't make em like ole George anymore...
And Mikey i KNOW the real reason you loved WILD THINGS- 4 words...FULL FRONTAL KEVIN BACON!!!!
For me, I'd have to give a top three, as there are SOOO many...
3- THE WARRIORS: A Walter Hill Classic, that unfortunately is getting the remake treatment as we speak. Yeah the gangs mostly look loke wusses now (except the LIZZIES- the gang of chicks was the scariest in the movie!) but I absolutely love everything about this film, from the music to the bad acting to Deborah Van Valenberg's (in her pre- TOO CLOSE FOR COMFORT days)tramp with a heart of gold ...and ps all GALACTICA fans- see if you recognize a WARRIOR in tonights episode!
2- VALLEY GIRL- Okay, I'm not sure this film is a guilty pleasure, as it's the only 80's film (outside of FAST TIMES) that actually RESEMBLES the real 80's, and it gave us Nic Cage in his first breakout role (some might say this is a bad thing...) but the soundtrack is PURE 80's gold, and the film is at once funny and at times downright touching (Check the bookended scenes where the PLIMSOULS are playing A MILLION MILES AWAY- that's good stuff!!!)
"Like F*(K you...FOR SURE!!!!!"
and my number one, without a doubt film that I'm ashamed of and yet I watch it EVERY TIME IT'S ON TV (and that's quite frequently...)
1) POINT BREAK!!!!
Ok...I know...how can I like any movie where Keanu stinks up the joint so bad that Patrick Swayze looks like Laurence Oliver by comparison? Cause it's got it all for a guilty pleasure:
- SURFING
-Swayze in pure stoner guru mode...his character's name was BOHDI for god's sake!!!
-A really hot Lori Petty
- two words...GARY...BUSEY!!!
- bank robbers dressed as ex presidents
- Keanu being keanu ("I...am an F...B...I...AGENT!!!!!")
- did I mention the surfing???
- and a final theme song by none other than RATT!!!! Ho can you go wrong with all that?
It's 100% PURE ADRENILIN, baby!!!!!!
...God, I'm so ashamed of myself!!!!

Mike said...

I have a Busey film that I love too. But it's the freakin' "Buddy Holly Story"! I feel better about myself knowing that you like "Point Break".

Aw, who am I kidding. Anthony Keidis was in Point Break. It came on last week... and I watched it.

As long as we're on Busey, how 'bout "Under Siege"? Busey in drag baby! Erika Whats-Her-Name (Ellie Mae Clampett II) showing boob. Whoo!

Does anybody else think Jake Busey has the potential to be the scariest-looking mother trucker in H'wood?

I said "boob". Sorry Laurie.

timxx said...

Isn't Jake Busey the lead singer for the Offspring? :)

i am a sucker for say anything and singles...especially say anything. i can quote it too. the other day i got compared to corey - does that get another pity point?
what if i sing you joe lies?

and skoehler, picking on the french are we? might i remind you who housesat for you when you went to that FRENCH festival thingy in illinois?

Anonymous said...

"Joe lies...when he cries..."
"That'll never be me, that'll never be me...no!!!!"

Ohhh yeah baby. Boob...there Tuttle..I said it too!!!

Speaking of, I mentioned SHOWGIRLS...there's enough boob in that, that u forget that people aren't just wearing skin colored shirts.....

Okay what about...and if anyone knows this one...They earn my eternal bad movie respect...
FAST FORWARD...

After seeing "Flash Gordon", I went right out and bought the soundtrack by Queen....the 8 Track.
I'm still waiting for the sequel.

I love.....absolutely love George Romero's Dead series.

"Blind Date" with Bruce Willis and Kim Basinger. Funny as hell.

"Kingdom of the Spiders" with Bill Shatner. Woohoo!

John Carpenter's "The Fog". Talk about plot problems. I like it, though.

I sat through two consecutive showings of "Meatballs" at the Edgewater Mall in Biloxi.
At the time, I thought it was the greatest movie ever made.......
until "Airplane!".

I love horror/suspense movies. That's nothing to be really ashamed of, I don't think. But some might not know that about me.

I saw "Cannonball Run" about 3 or 4 times at the cinema. Probably because of the scene where Farrah Fawcett's "headlights" were on.

But my most shameful admission is......I've never seen "The French Connection."

The Seven Hopping Vampires indeed!

The correct title of the classic film to which Mr. Pogue refers is "Mr. Vampire". This is a film of such gravitas that it spawned (a word rife with implications) no less than three sequels. The sequels had well-thought-out creative names; "Mr. Vampire 2", "Mr. Vampire 3" and Mr. Vampire 4".

In all the films, however, the vampires DO hop.

I love these films and for the life of me I do not know why.

I also freely and with a perverse pride confess my affection for the films of Santo, the silver-masked Mexican wrestler as he battles such evils in the world as "the vampire women" and "the ghost of the strangler". Doesn't everyone?

This weekend, at the Leasor household (and yes Chuck you might want to fly in for this one), there is an appalling drive-in double-feature scheduled featuring "The Mesa of Lost Women" and "Cat-Women of the Moon". How good can life get?

Guilty pleasures?

These would be mine...along with Italian giallos, Hammer films, various Euro-trash efforts, the jaw-dropping offerings of Coffin Joe of Brazil, and of course, the amazing canon of that king of schlock-meisters, Ed Wood.

Cheers,

Roger Lee.

Anonymous said...

Why do you love them? Because despite the fact that they are about Hopping Vampyres and stupid beyond belief, they are immensely entertaining!

Anonymous said...

P.S. - I'm booking my plane ticket now!

Anonymous said...

Hiya Tim. Let's see..."Goonies" would be my guilty pleasure. I saw it as a child...it made a lasting impression. Also, Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome. "Can you shovel shit". Great line.

Hiya Laurie Genet. You better call/email me. I miss you SOOOO much.

john carpenter's "They Live", with it's glorious fight scene between rowdy roddy piper and kieth david, Now thats a guilty pleasure!! the riffs live!!

timxx said...

Reminds me...I totally forgot Carpenter's two favorites of mine:
- BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA - once again, hardly a guilty pleasure as I think this may be the funniest film ever! Kurt Russell was absolutely BRILLIANT as Jack Burton, but it's just one of those films either people love or despise...very little middle ground...
- PRINCE OF DARKNESS- I don't think this one has aged well at all, but when I first saw it it scared the bejebbus out of me!!! AND...ALICE COOPER plays a crazy eyed street person who kills the guy who played CODY in RIPTISDE with a BICYCLE!!!!ROCK ON!!!
(Intent City , baby!!!)

timxx said...

...that's RIPTIDE...GOD I can't type anymore!

"Mr. Frost" starring Jeff Goldblum and Kathy Baker. Damn fine.

"what'd you think we were gonna do Jack? Waltz in and out of here like the wind??"

"YEAH! I thought that was your whole damn plan!!!"

God I love that movie!!!!

Mike said...

Laurie, I had to LOOK UP "Fast Forward". Sounds like a dog. According to IMDB, Sidney Poitier directed it and it sucked. Of course, Poitier also directed "Ghost Dad" (with Cosby). Ewww.

BUT... Poitier directed "Stir Crazy" and "Uptown Saturday Night". Not too shabby.

So, back to "Fast Forward". I take it this is one of your guilty pleasures? I also imagine this has to do with some moment of youthful fancy in which you dreamed of heading to New York?

Of course, I could have picked the wrong "Fast Forward" on IMDB.

Anonymous said...

Oh no Mike...you picked the right one. It is a guilty pleasure that does stem from my old fancy of running off to the city...

It is truly bad....but so bad it's good. I have a lot of films like that...I don't know why.

The acting is cheesy..the love stories ridiculous and the "finale" of the movie even worse!

But it has some really great dance fighting in it in a seedy NYC dance club...I mean, COME ON, anything with dance fighting has got some true "kitschy" potential!

Mike said...

Dance fighting! (So that's why you did West Side at Sayre.) I am ashamed to have watched the third American Pie movie, which had a great dance fight scene in it. If you haven't seen it for all the other valid reasons not to see it, you must check it out for that scene alone.

By the way Laurie (and I know this is early) are you going to be at SETC in Orlando '06?

Tim, do you wish I'd take these off-topic discussions off-blog?

Or, might the SETC mention suggest a new topic? Heh-heh.

timxx said...

Mike,
Yes and yes...

That would be CROSSROADS starring Ralph Macchio and the great Joe Senneca....be-yotch!

Anonymous said...

I don't know yet. The cost of living is so ridiculous here (third highest area for overpriced housing in the country!!!!!!!!!! Oh yeah....that's good.....) that I am considering a career change and then would have no reason to go to SETC......

sigh...I might become an ad exec for a local broadcasting company....anybody ever done that?

And I have seen the third American Pie more than once and LOVE the dance fighting scene!!!!!

Anonymous said...

remo williams!!! chop saki. you move rike pregnant babboon!

Mike said...

Remo Williams! With Joel Gray (I'll leave that quote hanging for you, X-man)!

Laurie, it is funny you mention the ad exec job. I was just thinking about talking with a local radio station about ad work. Not quite the same as "ad exec", but I'm still in Kentucky. Hey, I have an email address for you somewhere; not sure if it's current. I'd love to talk to you about that sometime. You can catch me at: mike(at)miketuttle(dot)net. (When you get time.)

Happy, Tim?

We could talk about Cooking Shows. Oh, I just love cooking shows! I get so many swell ideas from Emeril and Rachael Ray. She's so perky. I fixed my first homemade potato salad just this past weekend using a recipe I saw on The Food Network.

So, who's YOUR favorite cooking show host? Yayyy!

(Uh, X-man... you might wanna hammer out a new topic ASAP. I don't think I can hold 'em much longer. I feel like a little Dutch boy with his finger in the... uh-oh... nevermind... that was a close one.)

Seems to be getting alot of buzz right now.
