Well, it's been a bitch of a couple of weeks, but it's coming to an end, and there is light at the end of the tunnel! EARNEST opens tonight, after a very encouraging couple of final dress/preview rehearsals. If you'd like to check out a cool slide show with pictures and audio commentary from yours truly and some of the cast, check out this link:

Directing is a funny thing: I've always remembered one of my college professors words, when she told me that "If a show is good the actors get the credit: if it's BAD, the director gets the blame"...truer words were never spoken. I've even been guilty of this myself: How many times have I come out of a show saying "How could that director let those actors get up onstage and suck so bad?" It's one of those parts of the theatre that ain't fair, but it comes with the territory. I also find that I get more emotionally involved with shows that I direct. I'm NEVER nervous before going on as an actor (perhaps a little anxious or excited, but never really nervous) BUT as a director, I'm a wreck right before the show opens. But, I have to say, I'm really pleased with this one. We've had some bumps and snags, but I think it's all gonna be good in the end. But MAN am I ready for some rest! Show opens and I have spring break next week. Alas, we will be staying in Lexville, but I'll get lots of good quality time with the family unit, whom i feel I've been a little neglectful of lately, due to work and shows and conferences, etc...so here's to me getting a little bit of well deserved rest! And then, onto the next three or four projects!
So here's a nice non-confrontational question for you all- since I plan on watching alot of TV next week (NCAA Tourney action and all...) What is the best show on TV right now and why????
29 points for the song reference. It's a little tough, but it indirectly relates to EARNEST (a hint for those of you involved with the show)

For my money, SOUTH PARK is still the funniest, most incisive, dead-on-the-money satire on TV.
I'm also quite fond of THE DAILY SHOW with Jon Stewart, which gives one a better picture of the news than most of the 24-news channels.
I eagerly awaiting the return of both DEADWOOD & ROME.
There's nothing else I watch with any regularity. Most of the time, my remote clicks first to Turner Classic Movies, then The Westerns Channel. I haven't watched anything on the major networks for years.
THE WHO Another Tricky Day.
I'll take the lump sum, please.
NICE, Jal....sure you don't want those points spread out over the next thirty years?
I'll be dead in 4 weeks, so I'll take it now.
Thanks dude. I am proud of it...and I hope the audiences eat it up...
...but HOW CAN YOU LIST GALACTICA AS NUMBER THREE??????
Clearly, it's the finest show on telvision....
Battlestar Galactica....or as i like to refer to it BSG...is hands down the best hour of storytelling on tv...of course as many of you have pointed out that is NOT a hard race to win.
Break a leg tonight..all of you in Earnest. I know i am glad its finally starting so i can have my partner in crime back. The wolverine will be glad Prof.X is around more often too.
Yeah, Rick, I'll get right on that "great" TV show once I learn how to write a proper sentence first...
"24-news channels" is supposed to be '24-hour news channels" and "I eagerly awaiting" would probably sound a whole lot better...or at least not like a grunting caveman, if it were "I'm eagerly awaiting" or "I eagerly await". Take your pick. Now I've got to get to the theatre and give you more of my money. I have to see how the set turned out.
I watched the slide show my darlings and found myself yearning to be in that room...on that stage... with all of you. It looks brilliant.
I'll be up in April...wish it was sooner. Could...would someone tape it PLEASE!!!!!!???
Regardless, break a leg.
I open the "world premiere" of Marv Seigal's GENERATIONS APART on Thurs.
It's no EARNEST...but it's cute. Some fine folks in the cast.
Alas, Ms. L, we're forbidden by the powers at AGL from taping Earnest or any other show--a new and somewhat disappointing edict which must have to do with matters of copyright . We're faced with the transience of beautiful things, and the beauty of all things transient, just like in the old days when video tape did not exist.
BUT if you visit today's Herald Leader, you can read a very nice article by Rich Copley about how great Adam and Shayne are. Congrats, fellas.
Break a leg on Thursday!
Oh, and I know it's crappy TV, but I've been glued to PROJECT RUNWAY lately. Maybe it's the costumer in me. Maybe it's Heidi Klum...pregnant...in a mini dress.
Maybe I'm finally losng it.
Finally saw the show today and was laughing my hiney off with about 100 other people. What a fun show. Unlike the local critic, i thought the concept worked well. Many of the actors made strong choices and stuck with them and the audience was more then happy to go along for the ride.
I love a show that equally distributes the laughs and this one does....Shane and Adam are a hysterical duo...I applaude Rachel and Missy for creating some absolutely, insanely funny women.
Pete was priceless!!! The cast really outdid themselves. Its the most fun i have had watching a play in a long time.
Kudos to you all.
Its not on yet but will be soon....
The new Dr. Who!
A good friend gave me the entire season on disk and may I say it is hands down the best Dr Who ever.
Look for it soon on SciFi. You will not be dissapointed!!!
Other than that well Battlestar G of course!
I forgot....
You and your cast did a GREAT job!!!
As a tech guy it is rare to go to a show and not stare at the setting, lights, sound, etc.
With this one there was a lot that could have distracted me.
I have to admit it took a few moments to capture my attention but once they did I saw nothing but the performance.
This was truly a treat for me as well as a feat for you.
Thank you for a good day at the theatre. I really needed it!
Rick, I used to see Patrick Dempsey who stars on Gray's Anatomy once a year. We share the same business manager and would encounter one another each year at said business manager's Super Bowl Party. Seemed like a nice guy.
I will probably not be the one writing you a great TV show. My various forays into television have been such that I'm not sure its the medium for me. The good thing about it is that it is quick; the bad thing about it is that it is quick. Too much deadline pressure and it all ultimately becomes about demographics and ratings and audience share. In the past, I've been paid wonderfully obscene money to find out I don't much like TV. The above business manager still recalls with nostalgic wistfullness 1990 as my best financial year ever, when I had a three-picture feature film deal and an overall TV development deal at Universal. Two of the three motion pictures eventually got made (with varying degrees of success), one got written and molders on a studio shelf somewhere, as Miss Prism would say, "abandon-ed". Nothing ever developed with the TV development deal; I hated everything they brought to me, they hated everything I brought to them. But they still had to pony up the dough.
Thanks for all the kind words about Earnest, everyone. These people have worked their fannies off, and it shows. LG, I really wish you could come to KY a week early and see it!!
As for television programming, I still have to rate Battlestar Galatica as the best (D$, it ain't really sci-fi; it's actually very thinly disguised political drama). I'm eagerly awaiting the return of The Wire this summer, just so it can kick my behind as I try to follow its convoluted plots and hundreds of characters.
I'll put in a plug as well for the NEW Doctor Who, coming to the Sci-Fi Channel this Friday, March 17, at 9 p.m. This ain't the Doctor you might remember from Saturday nights on PBS in the 70s and 80s. This Doctor Who is much more like Buffy in its pace, dialogue, and degree of self-awareness. I've seen all the episodes too, and there are some wonderfully fun stories and hilarious lines. Give it a shot!
OK Natalie... Yes it has political drama into but with the spaceships, 'splosions, and space babes it is classic Sci Fi.
As Heinlein said, "Science fiction is not yet science fact.I love my microwave!"
I'll have to go with these:
1) Battlestar Galactica- Best show, bar none, going right now. Smart, edgy and wonderfully acted. They definitely have kept the space battles and 'spolsions to a minimum....this ain't guys in tin cans and Lorne Greene in a cape...Great cast and guest stars (Ed Olmos, Mary McDonnell, Dean Stockwell,Lucy Lawless, Michelle Forbes...Hell Richard Hatch is even kicking ass in this thing. Who knew that guy could really act?)
2) 24- It's edge of your seat, adrenaline pumping mayhem. Sure it's a "tad" unrealistic, but who cares? Never in my life would I have pinned Kiefer Sutherland to play such a badass as Jack Bauer, but MAN he makes it work!
3) Lost- would've had this higher last year, but they've slipped a notch this season. And narrative, continuous storylines on shows such as this are KILLED by the way the network programs them. A show here...two weeks off...three shows here, a month off...they should take a lesson from 24's "non-stop season" and run this show January through May. Otherwise, it's really easy to lose the thread...
4) ESPN's THE SPORTS REPORTERS- Smart, engaging conversation from some of the nations best sports writers and commentators. John Saunders has also filled in admirably for the late Dick Schapp.
5)....- This is the spot I reserve for the fact that there is NO Joss Whedon show on TV now, thus this space represents the hole in the soul of my TV viewing habits. BRING BACK THE BUFFYVERSE!!!!!
I, too, must admit that in all my geekiness, I am looking quite forward to the new Dr Who...
BTW, D$- I thought DEADWOOD went bye bye. At least I thought that's what AIN'T IT COOL said...
Oh, and I also relaly dig ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT...hope SHOWTIME doesn't frak it up too awfully bad!
That's what I heard about DEADWOOD...it could have been wrong though.
Yep- UT lucked out...But looking at their schedule, I think they could make it at least to a date with UNC in the Sweet 16...
Our beloved Wildcats of the U of K, however, might well get spanked in Round one by the 04 nemesis UAB- and if they DO get past UAB, the dreaded Huskies will await them in Round 2...looks like Tubby will be able to hit the links a bit early this year...HAven't filled out my brackets yet...perhaps THAT would make a good topic for us sporting geeks, no?
I doubt DEADWOOD is gone, there still promoting the Hell out of it on HBO.
REAL TIME WITH BILL MAHER is very good stuff!
I stand corrected...AICN reported that In Jan., HBO gave the greenlight for a 4th season. Last Fall there was talk of canning it, but apparently that didn't happen.
RICHARD HATCH??????
Is he nekkid?
I've really gotten out of the habit of watching TV since Joss left the form, But that being said, there are a number of things that i still enjoy.
1) Allthough this last season has been crap, Alias held my attention for a long time. I plan to catch the end of the season when april comes.
2) I'll watch any episode of Gilmore Girls, if i happen upon it. I may break down and purchase boxed sets, I don't normally purchase boxed sets except for British television series and the Sopranos. I swear, it's like crack for me. I couldn't explain my love for this series if i tried.
3) Speaking of the Sopranos, I have one word: Bit-torrent. Actualy, i have a another word: Yay!
4) Global Frequency. Oh wait, they never released that series did they...FOOLS!
5) Daily Show/Colbert Report
