"It's a sad man, my friend who's livin' in his own skin..."

So happy frakin' friday to you all! And for all you Battlestar Galactica Junkies, it is a happy friday indeed, as SCI Fi has this week released the first of ten "webisodes" that will connect seasons 2 and 3. If you wanna check em out, head over to scifi.com OR you can check 'em out on you tube.

For me, it's been a helluva week. Trying to get everything settled in the new casa, dealing with a baby who's a bit confused as to why we're not in our old apartment anymore, tons of work for the impending KTA festival in November, and being swamped by work at my new job. BUT- hell, I can't complain... I like it like this. Who was that poet who said something about burning your candle at both ends? Well, it IS a lovely light, my friends. Trust me on that...

So as I slowly dig myself out of a pile of beautiful disarray, here's your topic.
Tell us about the music you are listening to now (could be something new or something old you've recently discovered or RE-iscovered) Either choice will suffice... a nice lught, non-threatening topic for a beautiful late summer weekend!

127,000 points for the reference...for reasons only me and the wife know!

A little G LOVE AND SPECIAL SAUCE...just saw him in a little club called Jannus Landing in St. Pete...he rocked it OUT!!!!!!!! His new album is great called LEMONADE.
Matt just downloaded a DAVID GRAY DVD from Holland's PinkPop festival that is Fan-ta-Bu-Lous....
THE WAIF'S from Australia are killer...two sisters who are mucho musically and lyrically wonderful....
DONOVAN FRANKENREITER is a funny looking dude who has a grrrreat voice.
And me loves some BEN HARPER AND THE INNOCENT CRIMINALS...golly jeepers that man is one sexy fella and he sings soooo purty!
TRISTAN PRETTYMAN is wonderful. She just is so raw and true..

Garsh all golly folks I could go onononononononon. But I am a music junkie and (can u believe it?) even ACE mag several years ago put a music review of mine in their pages!! So you can trust my taste...really...I mean it... :-) But anyway- I am off to the Magnolia Fest in October to hear some great bands...so if anyone wants to come down to Live Oak FL in the Fall, come join us!!!!!

And TV- I'm guilty- Project Runway.

Pal Roger Leasor has been burning my entire collection on CD for me (for him too), so I have had plenty of travelling music in the car of late as I go down the nostalgia road of my youth and just my bizarre taste. Today I sampled Louis Jordan, Frankie Laine, and Fred Astaire. Yesterday, it was John Prine, Rosemary Clooney, Bing Crosby, and the soundtrack to the Peter O'Toole/Petulia Clark Goodbye, Mr. Chips. The day before that a selection of cowboy songs, a little Miklos Rozsa, and Larry Clinton and his orchestra. I've also got some plays on record. Dylan starring Alec Guinness is in the car waiting for me.

As my TV channel pretty much permanently sits on TCM, the Westerns network, or news networks, I've discovered no new shows. But I'm glad Bill Maher is back and I'll be watching that. And I see new episodes of South Park will be starting soon. Beyond that, I'm waiting for the next series of ROME.

And for a complete accounting of my freetime entertainment dalliance:

On my nightstand is a play by Colley Cibber (The title of which escapes me at the moment), a book on Elizabethan/Jacobean playwrights, one on the Restoration Theatre, a series of short stories about a Restoration Highwayman known as Galloping Dick by H. B. Marriott-Watson, and I just finished the Arthurian trilogy (Winter King, Enemy of God, & Excalibur by Bernard Cornwell (author of the Sharpe novels), which was excellent.

Actually the re-runs of the Sharpe series on BBCAmerica would be the best TV I've seen recently.

I find myself listing more and more to "world music"

A friend turned me on to MC Punjab. Indian (as in the country) Hip Hop.

Hip Hop and Rap are two DIFFERENT forms of music...

I dont understand anything he is saying, and being based in their music is was very wierd to hear at first.

I am completely transfixed to listen to him. It is Hip Hop in the truest sense of the word. The vocal trills and pops in harmony with the rythem. Then when you add Sitar and chimes...

anyway... thats what I have been listening to latly.

Coming off of a bizarre three-year techno/house/rave/trance addiction, I am currently listening to a smidgen of obscure country music, some 80s stuff and thanks to ITunes, I've rediscovered Dread Zepplin and The Fixx.
Thank God for IPod and ITunes.

Above I said Roger was burning my entire collection on CD. By that I meant my entire "record" collection. So far about five or six wine boxes of LPs with another three or four to come.

One bit of TV that I think will not be fun and that I will definitely NOT be watching is this right-wing bilge, ABC's Path to 9/11.

The director's father runs the organization which produced it which is a far-right religious group, I believe, and the screenwriter is an avowed conservative with a definite agenda.

Disney's on a real roll lately...Holocaust movies produced by Mel Gibson and now this.

Rick, you are kidding, I hope. Hey, they used to make movies in black and white too! Now I'm really going to scare you...I've got a Victrola that cranks and only plays 78s. (I know, I know...What's a Victrola and what's a 78?)

I tend to usually go with Blues or Classical or Jazz or Broadway. But I also enjoy popping in Jett (Get Born) and Nickelback (any album).

I'm currently on a Texas Swing jag, and am listening to David Ball's "Amigo," ancient Uncle Walt's Band stuff, Bob Wills and The Texas Playboys, The Waybacks (new and fab album is "From the Pasture to the Future").

But am also excited about Shawn Colvin's new CD, coming out any minute.

Also LOVE the Subdudes, O my gosh are they fun.

I've found myself listening to alot more JAzz, lately. All types: traditional, acid, smooth, you name it. I think it calms me...
I also have been dabbling in a great deal more country than I used to. Perhaps it's my roots showing! LOVE the latest Johhny Cash (American V) - a stark, stunning album that actually tackles the subject of how to die with grace and dignity. Good, powerful stuff...New Los Lonely Boys is pretty groovy texican jam (thanks, honey!)

TV wise- all about BATTLESTAR GALACTICA's season three- looks like it's gonna be a barn burner...I have absolutely no idea why you all watch this RUNWAY stuff...simply bizarre, to me...

Don't knock the RUNWAY, man....
And I am curious about this season's SURVIVOR cuz of the race thing...but it has been a while since I've checked that out.

RUNWAY is jussssst cheesy enough to have the reality edge...mixed with some real artistry and talent.

Of Montreal. You need to hear this band. And no, they are actually from Georgia.

Elvis Costello, live in NYC 1979. It's a Ryko disc release that absolutely SMOKES!!!

Les Savy Fav--Go Forth. Such a great album. I listen to it over and over. So should you.

Pavement--Terror Twilight. This album is one of the best albums of the 1990s.

Pixies--Doolittle. I placed this on my turntable and cranked it to 10. It still gives me chills. Black Francis has the voice of an angry angel.

The Bad Plus--the best jazz to come about in the past decade, surely.
