"I live my life like there's no tomorrow"

VAN F****N' HALEN!
No offense to Sammy Hagar (as I love me some Sam) but I've been waiting over 20 years to get to see these guys together again...and what do they do? Take away their original Bassist (Michael Anthony) and replace him with a TEENAGER!!!! (The kid on the far left is none other than Eddie Van Halen's son..WOLFGANG...I kid you not. That's the kids name! Good looking kid, though! Luckily he got his Mommy's DNA...) Makes me wanna puke...and yet, I'll probably lay down my hard earned jack to see them, should they play a shed near Lex-ville...You gotta admit, Diamond Dave looks fabulous! Tanned and rested and ready to rock! Eddie? Once again, he goes to a photo shoot looking like an aging, homeless skate punk...oh well- can't win 'em all!
But it's got me to thinking about nostalgia...is there an artist (musician/group, actor, whatever) from your youth that you'd like to come out of retirement (or the grave- the ULTIMATE retirement home) and perform again?
Do it.....DO it!!!!

I wished I had gotten a chance to Elvis, Olivier, Gielgud, John Barrymore, Edmund Kean onstage. Not altogether, mind you, each in their appropriate venues (though see the four actors onstage together mind have been damned interesting). I'd like to seen Elvis pre-Vegas...when he was still raw. Barrymore's Hamlet and Richard III; Gielgud's School For Scandal, Importance of Being Earnest, No Man's Land. Olivier's Oedipus, Coriolanus, and Hotspur.

Chuck, from what I hear, Elvis's CORIOLANUS was pretty hot!

But did you ever hear Gielgud's rendition of JAILHOUSE ROCK? Smokin'!

Rumor mill says ACDC may go out again this year. They are still actively recording and touring.

ABBA ....but only in their heyday. No crappy reunions.

Oh yeah, mid-70s ABBA would be fab! I wish I could have seen The Band back in about 1970. A truly reunited Genesis with Gabriel and Hackett would be a hoot (bring on the face paint and costumes!). And when we recently went to London, we sat on the steps in Hyde Park across from the Royal Albert Hall and fantasized about seeing Dylan there in '65 -- and a whole lot of other great shows that took place within those round walls!

So nat...how many holes DOES it take to fill the Albert Hall?

The original Chili Peppers (with Tree and Hilel Slovak)

Louis Armstrong's Hot Five and Hot Seven

Miles Davis and his "Kind of Blue" crew. (Evans, Coletrain, Adderley, Chambers, etc.)

The Quintet (Mingus, Powell, Bird, Dizzy, Roach)

Talking Heads

Iggy and the Stooges

Nirvana in their Bleach days

Rolling Stones with Brian Jones back in the mix

Sid Barrett era Floyd

Uncle Tupelo

original Reverend Horton Heat trio

The Experience

Ministry

Minor Threat

btw, it takes 14,923 holes.

Iggy and the remaining Stooges are actually going out this summer, Adam. It would be kind of interesting to see, but I believe at this point it could also be kind of sad (ala the NY Dolls reunion of the past year)

I'd add the Stones, but the Mick Taylor lineup was my favorite.
Also like to see Bowie/Ziggy w/ the late Mick Ronson and the Spiders from Mars. (Got to see Ronson play with Ian Hunter a few years before he died. Amazing show!) Not realy that hyped to see the Beatles BUT would love to see Lennon w/ the band he played the Stones Rock and Roll Circus with (Keith on Bass, CLapton on guitar and , I believe, Alan White on drums) and I was actually a big WINGS fan, growing up in the 70's and all. Would love to see the Wings Over America lineup.

Adam i actually got to see Dizzy G when i was in college. That was cool. Those cheeks always fascinated me as a child.

Even just seeing the words "Ministry" written makes me start to get anxious and nervous. Oh the things a bad mushroom trip can do to a young girl.

I would have loved to have seen Gene Kelley dance live. He was such a joy to watch on film. And its seems unfair that to my generation he was "that old guy in Xanadu".

I always regretted missing Bad Brains and Fishbone.

Bob Wills and The Texas Playboys
would definitely float my boat.

Uncle Walt's Band any day of the week.

And we could add in Jerry Jeff Walker & Guy Clark for good measure.

Guess I'm just an Austin gal.

tim, that was actually mitch mitchell at the stones rnr circus w/ lennon.

no bad brains though. alas.

ministry on mushrooms? are you insane? well, for the two hours at the show, you were.

kinda like seeing the butthole surfers, the flaming lips and STP on the barbeque mitzvah tour riding on 3 hits. mercy god, help us all.

LazyMom - I'm with you on the Gene Kelly thing.

Two, not only is Wendy's using rebellious music to sell burgers, but they are using rebellious music about masterbation. Classic.

For grave-robbing I gotta go with Stevie Ray Vaughan, The Beatles, Buddy Holly, The Doors, Jimi, Robert Palmer, The Who, Elvis in '68.

I would want these in their peak form though, not in some reconstituted revival form. So I guess this really is just wishing for a time machine and a nickel bag. And since we're throwing in the grass, send me to a Dead concert... just to be able to say I did it. (Hey, the Allman Bros were cool with a buzz.)

In terms of reunions or dust-offs that actually still could happen, I'd love to catch Dire Straits sometime. If only G'n'R could actually pull off a good reunion with some viable music. I would drive to see Pat Benatar with Neil Giraldo. I honestly believe she could still put on a show I would dig (as opposed to all the other washups). Not sure if Poe would do a great live show, but I wish her record company would pull its rod out of her so she can at least record a new album.

Back to the Grim Reaper for a minute, I would quickly trade him Justin Timberlake for something relatively even in worth. How about Rob Pilatus?

"Michael Jackson (I want the aliens to bring him back)"

EXCELLENT choice, Rick!

Mikey, I saw Stevie Ray in peak form in 85 (Gregg Allman opened up..it was the Heroin tour!!!) And Joy and I took our friend the Coach to see Benetar at the Grand Casino ballroom in Biloxi back in 2000. AWESOME show- except fro the "intermission" when they troted the grown daughters "singing group" out for a mini-set. As the French would say "'horri'ble!"

Janis Joplin...without a doubt....
Billie Holiday...mid career
Laurence Olivier in Richard the III
Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers.

There are probably a whole bunch of other ones that I can't think of right now.

Rick,

John Wayne in what? Hamlet? You've heard the old joke, no doubt..."Hey, Pilgrims, I didn't write this shit."

You wanna talk about PEAKING- how bout them VANDERBILT COMMODORES knocking off the #1 ranked Gators? Seems to me a certain blue and white group failed to do that recently...

Anonymous said...

i live in the Gator state and I can tell you NOTHING pleased me more than to see them fall!!!

X, you're looking postively gaunt. I hate you! What's the secret to your svelteness? Don't tell me it's gastrinomical deprivation.

No just gas!

Actually I've been flip-flopping alot with my weight the past month or so. This being cooped up inside crap doesn't do much for my waistline. Can't wait till the warm weather gets here again!
Last year, Joy and I both went on South Beach and lost a ton of weight, MOST of which we've managed to keep off for most of the year but eating healthier and working out- but it's a struggle. Tonight, for instance, we had a big FAT TUESDAY feast w. Red Beans and rice, jamboli, boiled potatoes and KING CAKE! I ain't gonna win no bathing beauty contests eating like that, I tell ya!
Thanks for the kind words Chuck.

DATELINE MTV-
According to many reliable sources, the VH reunion alluded to on the front page is now either postponed or possibly cancelled!
WTF???? That was quick!
