"Working your fingers right down to the bone..."

School's back in session! Classes at the local colleges start back this week, and the HS folks are already a week in. Where the hell did the summer go???? Oh well, at least it's still in the 90's, so we can imagine it's still those hazy, lazy da...what the heck am I talking about? There were no LAZY days this summer! Haven't been for years. Sometimes I'm downright relieved when the bell starts to ring in the fall. And I've got a busy one lined up. A show at AGL (Yay! I get to do some actin'!), a show at school, AND directing CATFISH MOON for STUDIO PLAYAH's.
So lot's happening.
There is something kind of cool about this time of year (well, except the WEATHER!) . I always get a sense of that "new school year" feeling that was so pervasive back in the day. That sense of excitement mixed with utter dread. Oy! And we thought things were SOOOO difficult and challenging and that life was so complex, didn't we?Bah humbug! If only we knew what was to come....
So everyone have a good week and enjoy the beginning of a "new year" as it were. And while you're at it, drop me a post about this topic: which "start of a new school year" stands out in your memory the most and why?

Let er' rip...I'll try to post more often, but if I'm a bit lax, it don't mean I don't love all of ya's! I'm just my usual worker bee self...and then some!

X, so I just committed with your colleague Mr. Rouse to teach something about the craft of screenwriting for four hours for four days next week. I'll be more frightened than your students. I'm sure I have knowledge to impart; I have real doubts as to my ability to teach. But will swim in the academic pool and hopefully not drown or, if I do, not pull any students down into the briny depths with me.

Right on, Chuck! We're glad to have you aboard! And I have no doubt that you'll do a wonderful job.

And btw- feel free to pull as many students into the briny depths as you feel necessary :)

Ok, I'll get the ball rolling.

I think the school year I anticipated the most was what would ultimatley become my final year in Undergrad. My UG career was long and storied, and I was MORE than ready to leave that institution. The buzz in the air that fall was palpable for me, and I could feel that it was going to be a year like no other. AND IT WAS! I wound up getting one of my best roles in college (Pantalone in SERVANT OF TWO MASTERS), my band played some of our best gigs ever, and I felt a level of acceptance and respect in my dept that I had not felt before then (probably due to the big changeover of the guard the year before when alot of the old timers went away.Suppose that made me somewhat of an elder statesman- D $ was in my same shoes at that point. He can probably verify that feeling)
But the biggest change of all was meeting the young lady I'd be married to within the year. And, I promise you, I knew she was the one the moment I laid eyes on her (though it tokk me a bit to come around to that revalation)
14 years later, here we are! Good times...

The school year that sticks in my mind was 20 years ago. Right about this time I was coming back from a month-long study trip in Germany and ready to start college. I was going to go to Indiana, but I arrived late (due to the aforementioned out-of-country excursion), and my classes and dorm assignment got all messed up. I felt totally lost among all the culture shocks I'd recently experienced. My dad did something very much out of character -- he insisted I was coming home. So I did, and right away I ended up going to Xavier in Cincinnati. Totally different from a huge state school, and I'm grateful I went there. I still draw on the education and critical thinking skills those Jesuits prize so highly.

ohhhh those dreaded jr. high days...remember, if u can, buying your "first day of school outfit." i would lay in out over the white chair of my desk set. my heart would race as if it were christmas eve....even tho i was to see all those people that i had spent the summer scorching myself around the pool with....it was as if i was heading into foriegn territory.....

I would have to say the year with the most anticipation was the 1st year of college. I was always somewhat of a loner. A vagabond periodically tasting the high school cliques but never sticking around for the next course, I couldn't wait for the anonymity of a large university. I felt at home for the first time because I knew no one. Sad, but true. Plus, I had become a gym rat my senior year, and I couldn't wait to get to show the college girls my guns!

I agree with you X about the last year at MTSU, but I think I'm living the most anticipated new school year right now. I'm definately diggin' my new environs, this school is special, the students are top-notch, and my colleagues are great. I'm the agent of change here and that makes me ready to kick some serious butt. I won't be directing at all this year, but I should have opportunitites to audition and hopefully act in Charlotte. I really think Charlotte is a very cool town a lot going on around here as far as the arts go. I plan to be here for a very long time
peace,

Rock on, D. I feel the same way about my (relatively) new digs at BCTC. I'm amazes daily at the talent of some of these folks. THe sky's the limit.
Glad to hear it's great on your end. You deserve it, my friend.

Tell Anna to say HEY to Laddy for me.And if you would, let them know that the latest issue of ARTS KY features a big story on BCTC's production of BLESSED ASSURANCE. If Laddy wants copies, I can hook him up.

Honestly the one I most anticipated was my first no longer as a student. I was working at The College of William and Mary, so still connected to academia, but I did not have to got to any classes. I was never a big fan of school.
Natalie, I had no idea you almost went to IU, we would have been there at the same time if you ahd gone, strange how peoples paths seem to cross, or almost in this case.

Steve, that's funny about IU! Yeah, it *is* strange how people almost meet at one time and then do later on. And my life would have been a whole lot different, I'm sure, if I'd stayed at a big state school like IU. I was really happy to end up at a smaller university for undergraduate, but I liked going to a really big graduate school (in my case, Univ of Cincinnati).
