While I agree that this is a VERY important election (we're mired down in a seemingly endless war, there's unrest world-wide, and oh by the way...the economy???) and I'm firm in regards to which candidate I'll support...I have to ask; is this REALLY the best we have???? These two? Really?
My mother, a life long conservative, called me this morning and ASKED ME WHO SHE SHOULD VOTE FOR! Yes, Ma is getting a older, but her wits are all there. She's really bamboozled on this one, and referred to the candidate of her party of choice as "a clown". As for my own choice, during the primaries he was a DISTANT third on my list. Not much to get excited about, I'm afraid.
The best that both these men can be accused of is "poor judgement". Where do I start? How bout with VP selection. In this corner, Senator Obama- agent of CHANGE. Gonna take the country by storm- no more "business as usual" in Washington. So who's my VP choice? Do I break further new ground by going with the woman who ran a hard fought campaign against me and can bring her 18 million supporters to the table?? Nope- say hello to Smokin Joe Biden- WASHINGTON INSIDER and CAREER POLITICIAN!!! So much for "change"...
AND in THIS corner- John McCain selects...Romney? Jindel? Huckabee? Hell, even Rudy G????
Nope- Gosh darnitt I'm gonna select the Gov of Alaska- a woman who barely sees eye to eye with me on anything, is embroiled in a NUMBER of political and personal scandals, and - oh by the way...doesn't appear to be very SMART!!! (Oh well, worked for W all these years, right?)

I do not fear the terrorists; they have not whittled my civil liberties away and trampled the constitution. Bush and his gang of corrupt, incompetent thugs have. And for the rest of the GOP party (Grumpy Old Poops?) to play the party game for loyalty's sake is not admirable. There is nothing admirable about party loyalty when your party if wrong and destroying the country. I fear if we go on like this, in a few years we will look back and realize we've become the bad guys. As Terry Pratchett says, "You can't do bad things and call yourself the good guy."
I have voted Republican in the past, but never will again until the moderates of that party take it back from the extremist whackos who now represent their core and base. And those whackos are embodied in Sarah Palin...who thinks dinosaurs and men wandered the earth together and wanted to have a discussion with the local librarian about banning a few books. Sorry, but the words "book-banning" are Nazish to me. I'm a writer. More importantly, I'm a reader and a book collector, the suppression of ideas and books and knowledge scares me more than anything else.
And who is responsible for Sarah Palin? John McCain. And his choice goes to his decision-making ability. Its cynicism and inappropriateness alone should disqualify him for the highest office in the land.
But we can add the fact that the so-called straight-talk express has derailed and McCain has reversed himself on a vast majority of his stances...not the least of which are no negative campaigning, the religious right, and torture (almost unforgiveable, given his history). He's shown he's just another monkey whose going to dance to whatever tune the base plays to try and get himself elected.
Most disturbing of late is the hate-speech he and Sarah Palin have been stirring up at their rallies. For him to allow epithets and threats about Obama, like "Terrorist" and "Kill Him" and for newsmen to be insulted with racial slurs and not forcefully and angrily condemn them on the spot is to encourage them. He and Palin are making this country look Germany in thirties.
I agree that the party choice seems an obvious one- but that aside, for me, the jury is still out as to whether Obama is all he's cracked up to be.
I disagree as far as the title of this post. This is not an election where there is not a good choice. I beleive Barak Obama to be what he is cracked up to be. So, he chose Joe Biden, good choice, who cares if he is a lifelong Washington Senator he will serve as a great second to try to implement the change that Obama hopes to bring to the Country. Biden can be trusted to not overreach like a certain VP who sahll remain nameless and it was obvious that there would just be too much conflict between Obama and Hillary. Biden was the obvious choice and should actually be the candidate. But Hillary and Obama sucked all the air out of the room with their historical campaigns. I thin Obama is deeper than what we might here in a debate or on the campaign stump. He's smart enough to know that he only has two minutes to talk about very complex issues that need more time to be elaborated. No candidate has ever been specific except in thier written policies which are on line or you get from the campaign office in the community.
The Best is running and The Best ain't McCain. I think this country is about to turn a page. Who knows how successful this Cat will be, but I don't think anyone coming into these circumstances is going to do much, but Obama will deliver in many intangible ways that no other cadidate could.
D, I wish I had your faith in the man, but the jury is still out. I'm not saying he CAN'T or WON'T be a fine leader,(and he'll most likely get my vote) but I think the entire Democratic party was in far too big of a hurry to annoint this dude the chosen one. I certainly understand the rush to embrace someone who's well spoken and can motivate folks (esp after the past 8 years!) but I'm just not sure he's so "different" from the rest. And quite frankly, I've yet to hear any sound reasoning behind some of his former alliances, and quite frankly, I believe the man has some 'splaining to do.
I also have some serious issues with the way the Democratic party has demonized the Clintons. That people in that party, as well as a large part of the media, tried to paint Bill Clinton as a racist is despicable to me.
I agree with the above post. I think Biden, someone I've largely admired over the years, was a strong choice and I don't even think Hillary expected, hoped, or wanted to be the VP pick after Obama won the primary. What Obama has going for him that neither Bush nor, sadly and disappointedly, McCain have is intellect. There's no guarantee an intelligent and an intellectual man will be able to swim all the treacherous channels of politics (Jimmy Carter, a smart man, was a alas, I think, a failed president), but I'll still put my money on brains before strutting rhetoric, showy patriotism, and the guy you want to have a beer with. In fact, my prime requisite for a President is someone who is smarter than me.
By above, I meant d$, X. If you want to look to questionable relationships and guilt by association. Look no further than McCain's relationship with Charles Keating,one of the scummiest, evil men around who's financial finagaling was exactly the kind of shit that's got us in the trouble we're in now. Growing in Cincy, I also remember him there as an awful blue-nosed crusader heading up an organization called Citizens for Decent Literature, another one of those book-banner type.
As for the Clintons, I think they brought a lot of the demonization on themselves. God love them...and I do, he's still my favourite president...The primary campaign was not Bill's finest hour.

Personally, I was all for Kucinich. They asked him why he alone voted against the Patriot Act, and he answered, "Because i READ it!"
But in terms of what this country needs right now, Good or Evil? Personally, I'll take COMPETENCE. I think i'm hungrier for competence from our elected officials than anything. And if nothing else, Obama has proved he's competent.
I think hillary was competent too, but that she was advised to cynically game the system by high priced DLC consultants. and the American people could feel it.
Recently, during the Democratic convention, John Kerry came out and gave a stirring speech directly from the heart, and the reaction from coverage on the left was, in effect, "Where were YOU four years ago?"
I know where he was. He was buried under a mountain of crap advice from crapweasle consultants. The same ones that buried and bankrupted Senator Clinton.
He's handled himself very steadily in this last month of challenges, and McCain is simply coming unglued. He still doesn't seem to comprehend the concept of the 24 hour news cycle or even that people are recording his words. and comparing them to words that were said yesterday, or years ago, you know, back when he WAS a maverick.
McCain has gotten away with things that other candidates have been utterly crucified for, and that, mainly because he's been a media darling and propped up by the right wing media outlets.
But more and more people are getting their news via The Daily Show, and the Colbert Report, and this has led to a drift toward the left, creating greater ratings and more relevance for Olberman and Maddow. And as a result, McCain's campaign is falling apart. Even their character assassination isn't playing as well as they'd hoped, and it's all they've really got to work with. They refuse to put their policy out under the harsh light of day.
And as far as the polls are concerned, The only way that McCain/Palin are getting into the white house is if, bush starts a shooting war with Pakistan, or they blatantly steal the election.
And if either happens...Well. "Blood in the streets" and "Stock brokers hanging from lamp-posts" seems a little dramatic...But I suspect it's coming.
You know, I keep hearing this: that McCain's only chance is if there is another terrorist attack.
My question is why?
Why do the pundits and the people think this is advantagous to the Republicans?...While I don't know that anyone can 100% effectively guard against terrorism, the first terrorist attack happened on the Republican watch and one could argue that maybe if Bush and his cronies had actually read memoes entitled "Bin Laden Determined To Attack The US", it might not have happened.
So a second terrorist attack on their watch would only prove that the Republicans weren't very good at stopping it a second time.
The only thing they were good at was getting us bogged down in a war with a country that hadn't attacked us...and personally I believe that war was on Bush and Cheney's agenda from the minute they took office. 9/11 just made it easier to push for it.

Well. That goes for the country too. And people tend to break republican when they aren't thinking clearly.
I supported Kucinich until he withdrew--but I knew he would never make it, as cute as he is standing next to his gorgeous wife and saying "I'm electable if people vote for me." Obama is electable, and I think he's a damn sight better than some other options. I never considered Hillary a good choice because she's made too many enemies; even if she managed to win, she'd never get anything accomplished because too many people hate her so much and would go out of their way to see that she never got anything done. (I think this was also true of Bush the younger until 9/11 changed the game.)
Obama is about the best politician we're going to get, considering a 9/10ths of what earns a serious candidacy is right place-right time: he voted AGAINST an unpopular war, he's strong(but not too strong) on social issues, and he'll focus on domestic issues instead of fighting 800 miniature wars. I know he'd never say it, but I believe he's implied that the reason he STILL doesn't support the surge is because it's throwing bodies at a problem. ("How DARE he not support our terrible war tactics! Let's reinstate the Alien and Sedition Acts!" "No, we already did it, but we're calling it the Patriot Act." "Oh.")
There may be better candidates out there, but the stars haven't aligned in such a way that these candidates would have a serious chance of getting elected. Considering how many concessions to image one must make to get where Obama and McCain are, I consider myself lucky to have gotten someone as obviously intelligent, who works hard to appear compassionate and expects Americans to be smart enough to keep up with him.
And I like McCain less and less. When I realized back in March that McCain was going to get his party's nomination, I didn't think that was such a bad thing. But as this campaign wears on, I see how his campaign isn't even under his control(hence the hateful ads and the ridiculous running mate), and I don't want to put another puppet in office.
I agree with you X about Clinton's being turned into demons and racists. I would have voted for Hillary, but for Obama. Obama didn't demonize the Clinton's he didn't claim racism. That is a bogus idea that the "racist" fire was coming from Obama. It is also bogus that Obama is some way associated with Ayres because he admired the dude's extreme actions in the 70's. They were on a charity board together. Actually it was a charity board under the auspices of a republican name. In fact I think Ayres was for Obama because he saw someone who could bring about the type of change that he so wanted but was using the terrible tactics of blowing stuff up. Obama can and will do it peacefully and hopefully in a non-partisan way. I'm afraid the SMEAR machine is soiling the sheets before Obama can even get in them.
I don't doubt that D. I certainly am not one of these whack jobs who believes that Obama has some hidden aganda, and will immediately turn us over to the commies once he's in office! That's as silly of a notion as ever I've heard espoused on talk radio (and BOY have they had some silly notions before!) BUT...at the same time, I'm just not drinking the Obama Kool aid just yet. I'm glad you all have such faith in him, and I hope you turn out to be right! That's a plate of crow I'll happily sit down to.
My concerns with his association with guys like Ayers and his refusal to even vet Hillary for the VP slot go to the man's judgement. I'm still particularly smarting over Hillary's dismissal. Chuck may be right- perhaps Hil didn't want it, but how, pray tell, can you ignore Hillary,who represented 18 million votes. Hillary, who, unlike Obama, consistently beat McCain in national polling for over 6 months running during the primary. Hillary, who carried the Electoral College. Hillary, who won the Swing States, etc, etc....It seems to me that in making that decision, he put his ego first. He certainly wouldn't have been the first "great president" to have issues with his VP (hmmmm... a certain JFK comes to mind!) so I don't buy the nonsense that she would have "caused him too much trouble". A strong president should be able to weather that storm.
Ultimately, Biden has turned out to be a not so bad (albeit rather safe and uninspiring) choice. Thanks in part to McCain's Palin decision, which seems to finally be biting him in the ass. (Did anyone besides me notice her completely throwing McCain under the bus during the VP debate? All she seemed concerned with was announcing her own candidacy in 2012!) And it certainly looks as if Obama is gonna win this one in a walk, and for that, quite frankly, I couldn't be happier.
I just hope the "change" we are all being promised is for the better, and that it actually occurs.
What amazes me is all the elderly Jewish folk who will be voting for MCCain in Florida. How any Jewish person can watch him and that evil woman he made his VP incite and fan the flames of hate-speech and mob angry and not be scared to death is beyond me. This is how holocausts start!

When people question Obama's experience, particularly in the primaries, it made me wonder, What the hell makes Hillary Clinton so qualified to be president? My wife said during the primaries, "Sleeping with you for 5 years hasn't made me qualified to be an artistic director" (insert your own joke here)...as a history major growing up, I believe that fate/chance/luck/circumstances conspire to put the right person or people in the right place at the right time...the Founding Fathers, Jacksonian democracy, Lincoln (look at the presidents of the USA/CSA...one was considered imminently qualified to be president, the other was not...yet Lincoln destroyed Jefferson Davis...it wasn't even close)FDR in 1932 etc.
I was initially for Bill Richardson, but Barack Obama has excited me abouta political candidate more than any other in my life...he brings gravitas, he is intellectually curious (something Bush/McCain and Palin are clearly not), he brings standing in the world...despite his "lack of experience" (and you could have said the same thing about Clinton, a gov from a politically insignificant state in 1992), I believe he will define the position rather than letting the position define him.
He is also one thing Jimmy Carter was not and Abraham Lincoln was...he is a CONSUMMATE politician and I don't use that word as an epithet. Intelligence alone is not enough, you need to be politically savvy enough to understand how and when to use your bully pulpit...any guy savvy enough to out politic Bill and Hillary is a MASTER and I think that is a bonus point for Obama that Jimmy Carter never learned and didn't have the stomach for. You can even liken Obama choosing Biden as akin to Kennedy choosing Johnson (as long as Obama doesn't visit Delaware!)...he needs a guy who understand how the game is played, yet he is young enough not to allow a veep to overshadow him. Kennedy, I believe was quoted as saying something like, "What the hell do I need a Vice President for, I'm young enough and I got to get the son of a bitch out of the Senate to get anything accomplished." Obama understands the game and will play it well. Lincoln was a GREAT politician, FDR was a GREAT politician, I think Barack Obama is a GREAT politician and in my mind, it is a no brainer!!

I have a theory that the same aliens that kidnapped Michael Jackson around 1985 and replaced him with a similar but not quite replica did the same thing with McCain around 2006...any takers on that theory?

I think McCain just caved to the far right side of his party, thinking this was the only way to get past guys like Romney and Rudy. I mean, come on, is it not the surprise of the 2008 campaign that THAT GUY is the Cons choice? Unless my conspiricy theory is correct and the Cons just simply don't WANT to win this election, and are content to throw the Dem to the lions that are the next four years.
Here's what gripes me about the "How is Hillary more qualified" argument.
1) No, being first lady DOESN'T automatically mean you're a candidate for the office. However, Hil was always VERY hands on, and her career path was set the moment she got in the White House. And while, no she didn't have security clearance, she was the first First lady to occupy an office in the West Wing, she served in the tradition FL ambassador roles, and it was common knowledge in the Clinton cabinet that Hil was the last person he consulted on every major decision (except for those couple of years they weren't speaking) So, does Lara being married to you make her automatically a good AD? No, but if she had a desk right beside yours on the 4th floor,went on PR assignments as a Theatre representative and was in on every casting, directing and play selection choice you made AND to boot, you were going to be around during her entire tenure guiding her through the mine field?...well, you do the math.
2) More Math - Hillary is in her
2nd senate term- Obama hasn't finished his first.(and no, I don't count the state senate stuff!We're talking a national stage, here) That would say to me "more legislative experience".
But what the Hell- I was for Edwards, and look how HE turned out!

I was with Obama after reading his book (Audacity) back during the primaries. It's his overall philosophy on problem-solving and finding common ground that blows me away. Once I saw what he was trying to do, it jumped off the page and screen at me every time I saw him. One of the best ways to get to know him is to hear what Michelle says about him (or read Audacity). That perspective informs everything he does in voting, debating, speechifying, etc.
