Tennessee, Tennessee, there ain't no place I'd rather be...

GREETINGS FROM NASHVILLE !! (or 20 minutes to the southeast). Joy and I are smack-dab in the middle of our mini-vacation from the Bluegrass, and LOTS AND LOTS of family....My Mom and my brother Tony and his family all live nearby, Joy's Mom and Dad and younger brother live here, AND Joy's sister Hope is in with her hubby and 2 kids...and FRIDAY my other brother Jerry arrives...FAMILY FAMILY FAMILY!!!!Gotta love em...
Which brings up a great new Topic... How has your family reacted to your decision to devote your time/life to the theatre? Were they receptive? Helpful? Supportive? Did they ridicule you? Give you a dumb blank stare as if to say " Are you SICK OR SOMETHING???" Are there any particular members of the family who have supported/inspired you...did you have other family members in the craft?
YOU get the idea...so discuss!
AND as always- bonus points for the title reference...this one's kinda easy...btw-the reference scores are :
Anon 1 (from the boro) -2pt
Diva master- 1 pt
Natalie- 1 pt

My family didn't have much to say about it. I think they were just happy I went to college and finished. After I graduated, I would see friends from high school and they would say "I knew you would do something like that." It's funny that they never mentioned that when we were in high school because it never occured to me to be involved with theatre until I was 23.

As long as I kept my clothes on, my folks would come and see my work. I don't want to give the impression that I was naked on stage a lot but I had the chance to be "out there." And no, it wasn't "Hair." Jesus, give me some credit. The things we do for money, huh? Oh yeah, and chicks. ONLY KIDDING!!
By the way, if you ever are "out there" on stage, wear socks. Yep, just socks. You will feel clothed. Cold, but clothed.
Since I started teaching theatre more, my folks seem to be breathing a little easier. There will always be kids and they will always need teachers. And we always need new actors, right? Where would we be without Dakota Fanning, hmmm?
Watching my father preach (like giving a 15 minute monologue every week) probably made the idea of getting up in front of people and entertaining them a little more appealing or whatever. And my mom is a teacher. I guess we see who my influences are. And don't forget Dakota Fanning. She's hot. I can't believe she was married to Mel Brooks for 40 years!

As long as I turn out good work and seem happy, my folks are content with this path I call a life.

Oh yeah. And health insrance.

And the lyrics come from that kick ASS Christian heavy metal band STRYPER!!!

Whaddya mean I'm wrong?!

WHATALIFE...you are a WINNER!!!!!!It is indeed the Dead. Glad to see there's at least one old Hippie among us(lol)!
Arrested Development was a fine guess...STRYPER was not!Nor do I ever want another mention of them on my blog!!!!!!!! (allthough TO HELL WITH THE DEVIL was a fine album!)

I gotta stay off this board. It's making me all misty and I'm seeing too many friends.

Topic: My folks think I'm a wandering waste and therefore have no opinion one way or another about whether or not I do theatre. But, my dad came to see a Boone show in 2001 that I was stepping in as understudy for the night (I do believe that was OPENING NIGHT, Mr Davis- ahem). He came through meet-n-greet and asked me how long I had rehearsed. I told him I had only had one walk-through and no real rehearsal. You shoulda seen the look on his face! He was floored! Like all sons, I think I still love shocking and surprising my old man.

My ex-wife, however... geez! She was so afraid I'd have to kiss someone onstage, or worse that it would be a man! I auditioned for "Love! Valour! Compassion!" and she freaked. I actually got a part (the Nathan Lane role) but had to turn it down to go do Boone. She thought theatre people were shallow, self-congratulatory dross and suspected that I had a thing for a particular girl in the theatre dept. at EKU.

Of course, she is mostly right. And, five years down the road, I am about to marry that very girl.

Why the venom for Stryper? Sing it with me!

"Honestly, I believe in you. Do you trust in me?"

Mu-Hahahaha! Get that outta your head tonight Mr. X. Any band that'll remake "Shining Star" should go to hell, go straight to hell, do not pass Go, etc.

And, "To Hell With the Devil" was not a fine album, it was a fine album *title*. Long before "Look What the Cat Dragged In" hit and we got used to seeing bands, not just in make-up, but in chick make-up, I used to play a sick joke on guys at school using a strategically folded picture of Stryper from a metal mag. Showing faces only, I'd ask which one of these "hotties" the unsuspecting mark would like to bang. He'd pick one and then I'd unfold the page, showing the hairy spandex-framed chests of the Sweets and Co. Arrrggghhh! I laughed and laughed and cried and ran and spit teeth for weeks. Fun.

Sorry, Mikey...TO HELL WITH THE DEVIL is maybe the greatest Christian metal album of all time!!!! (which is sorta akin to being the finest winery in Idaho...but I digress...)
For me personally, most of my family hs been supportive- my wife, obviously, has my back (her working to help put me through grad school, and not yet dumping my sorry ass and all...) My older bros were the ones who drug me into this thing, so I always got support from them: still do. My mother has always been cautiously optimistic regarding my career, but for the most part she always encouraged me to be who I am (I also think she was just REALLY happy that I didn't wanna be a rock star anymore...)
My Dad, who passed when I was 18, encouraged me to get into acting, but he never really saw it as a vocation, just a nice hobby for me. He only ever came to see one play I was in (Neil Simon's GODS FAVORITE in HS) and though, in his usual manner, he didn't say much, I think he was proud.
AS for others (extended family / Friends of, etc...) they either all have one of two reactions when I tell em that I'm in theatre.
A) "You can DO THAT for a living?"
or b) they give me that smarmy smile and a little "Oh..." as if to say "You poor delusional bastard!"
btw- peachy4u- are you a USM DIVA? If you don;t wanna reveal your identity, cool- I'd just like to know if someone other than DIVAMASTER is posting (btw- DIVAMASTER ROCKS!!!!!)

I started collecting comics at age 5. My mom and I would act/read them out...giving all the characters specific voices. My mom put me in the 1st grad production of Peter Rabbit. I was Peter Rabbit...thank you very much. My grandfather always encouraging me to read, and to be what ever I wanted. My family is very supportive. Just about every member of my family came to see The Foreigner. Even my DAD came to see this. All of my great aunts are ultra supportive. They've been to everything. However, my great aunt Genie was NOT to happy about the number of times the F word was used in Sideman. Also, besides my Mom and Grandfather...Carol Burnette, Jack Lemmon, and Paul Newman have all been big inspirations.

if you ask timxx about 1985, he will invariably mention Live Aid as one of his best memories of that amazing summer. the peanut gallery and live aid. in the minds of us in the gallery, they will be forever linked. it is in the spirit of that summer that I urge all of the visitors to this sight to sign the pettition on live8live.com. the gallery was all about taking care of each other, as those of you who have seen tim's show know. twenty years later, we have the chance to find that feeling again

Hey Tennessee Jed and friends ... What do you think about the return of Stryper?

Along with Stryper's return, some are remembering Whitesnake too!

Also, what do you think of a Jerry Garcia stamp?

Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly, Bill Haley, Ritchie Valens, Dinah Washington and Otis Redding (among others) have received this honor, so a precedent has been set for American stamps honoring American rock, jazz, and blues musicians.
