Zzzzzz! I don't look at a sports page until baseball season begins. And then, once the Reds break my heart and dash my hopes somewhere well before the All-Star Break, I stop looking at it once again.

I'm the only person I know who went to UK for four years and never attended a basketball game.

Anonymous said...

Your loss.
March Madness may be the single greatest few weeks of sports all year. I admit that I'm more of a football guy (LOVE the NFL) but doggone it , come tourney time I'm glued to the set! Case in point, some nail biters today...(Gonzaga/Xavier - BC/ PAcific)
Don't think UK is gonna have that great of a tourney, though. Even if they do get around UAB, they have U Conn waiting in the wings...

So far a great batch of games. Would have like to seen a bracket buster here or there, but still a very entertaining first day. Steve, IU was scrappy, that is for sre. SD St. made some extremely stupid errors at the end which IU capitalized on. Good to see Crazy Mike getting to coach another day.

Oh, and Tim, just so you know, I'm going to have a small transistor radio in my pocket and headphones on during the show tonight so I can hear the 1st half of the UK game. Basically, I'll be phoning in my performance, okay? Or I'll just be drunk. Possibly even both. I may throw a pill in there just for fun.
Okay. Cool. I mean, we'll probably have a house of only 40 because if the tournament, anyway.

Hey Tim, finally found you...actually, now I have a job where I can access this site. : )

Just sayin' howdy...big basketball fan but I'm not making any picks this year - I've chosen bracket abstinence...Brackstinence?? Bracketnence? Enjoying the games more with no money riding on 'em...but one game this evening makes me a little nervous.

BOB!!!

Welcome to the fold!!

Thanks, Adam! Good to be here : )

I understand about being on stage during game time...If it's ok with everyone, I volunteer to be in the light booth tonight, recreating the game for you (minus the dunks, of course). I'll wear my authentic UK jersey and bring my nerf goal.

I have personally been involved with a show where the curtain went up 11 mins late so we could give the outcome of a very close UK game that was just finishing.

I really enjoy watching this kind of local loyalty. I am glad people get passionate about something. I wish theatre had such following.

Can you imagine ... Equis, lets say. People in the crowd with painted faces. Some with eye patches. Horse mascot in the stands. Intermission bring the dancing girls and "naked, blind horses are sexy" t-shirts thrown into the crowds. Between acts games. $25.00 tickets going for $100 by the scalpers.....

Anonymous said...

Well, Russell, theatre will never have that kind of loyalty or passionate following as long as the practitioners of it hold the curtain eleven minutes late, letting a game take precedence over their performance. It shows disrespect for the theatre and the paying audience that apparently thought that it was more important to be in the theatre that night than be at home listening to the game.

ReverendEddie said...

Theatre will never eclipse Basketball in this region. You'll always get people sitting in the audience wearing ear phones, listening to the Big Blue Sports network. Even if say, Galligher was to perform.
We'll see that tonight. That is if the wife is able to drag her husband away from the television.

Anonymous said...

"It shows disrespect for the theatre and the paying audience..."

Or, just maybe, it shows that you know your audience. It may have been perfectly appropriate to do that for that audience, for that production, at that place and time (Russell, how many people left before the curtain went up?). Perhaps they struck the perfect balance that night. At any rate, I'm assuming you weren't there, so you probably don't know all the details, so maybe the judgement could be a little less harsh. God forbid a theatre ever holds the curtain.

The Braves? Good luck with that one, Rick!

Actually JAL, I'm thinking of hanging the video screen from THE STORY and just projecting the game WHILE you guys are performing. It'll be great...I'll say it's POST MODERN - maybe then I'll get some love from the critics out there...but then again, probably not...

Anonymous said...

Tim - hang the screen, project the game, and call it POST-UP MODERN - you can get some love and coin a new phrase!

Anonymous said...

Oh good god ya'll!

No one left and it was a light hearted show that benefited from a good cheer before it started.
(never underestimate a good "warm up" curtain speech to a show!)

Sorry I got off topic...

I agree with skoehler in Duke and Uconn. I hope it is Uconn but I fear Duke.

Anonymous said...

By George I think you're onto something, Bobby!

Anonymous said...

No way , on the Dukies there Russell...I preduct they will get swated down in the sweet 16 by LSU and Glen "Big Baby" Davis...no relation...

Anonymous said...

It not like I want Duke to win...

Anonymous said...

Well, hell , who around here does?
Allthough I must admit, I hate UCONN too, which is why I'm really pulling for BC (BOSTON COLLEGE, Not "Big Country"...allthough I think he might be able to take out UK all by his lonesome!)

Anonymous said...

Adam, no doubt theatre will never eclipse basketball in these parts.

But I hope you're wrong about the audience turn-out tonight. It would be nice for you and the rest of the cast.

While there's definitely some cross-over, I'd like to think that those attending the theatre want to be there and that you could fill your seats with enough of an audience that preferred theatre to basketball...even in Lexington.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for a full house.

Anonymous said...

"I am willing to bet that there are more than 150 people in Lexington who do not care about the game"

I agree, Steve. I think there are a fair amount of people in and around Lexington who look for something other than the game (especially if their favorite TV show is preempted by said game). It's not like you're trying to find 5,000 people to fill the house.

Excellent point about snubbing, as well. I love to watch a good game...love to play one even more. And, I enjoy watching a production, but I'd rather be involved.

Anonymous said...

"...love to play one even more..."

So Bob ...(and anyone else interested) want to get up a game this weekend? I have a whole gob of free passes to the Y I go to in Beaumont...any takers? Rick8 and I went and shot around a few weeks back.

Anonymous said...

Tim, free passes? My knees say nonono but the rest of me says Who's Got Next...a definite possibility. If not this weekend, I'll take a rain check! Got Mousetrap auditions (come out one and all! More info at www.studioplayers.org), so I may be in planning...

Anonymous said...

Just a NOTE...I went 23 and 9 in Round one on my brackets...not terribly shabby. (INCLUDING picking upsets for Wis-Milw. and NC State)
Hows everyone else doing?

Anonymous said...

UK, UCLA, DUKE, and Florida. Duke and KY in the championship game. KY by 5.

Anyone who says different is a dirty hippie. ;)

Anyone see the George Washington mascot? It looks just like George Washington. They are the George Washington George Washingtons.

ReverendEddie said...

I take it the majority of folks brackets are pert-near pretty screwed?

No, you DIDN'T pick George Mason.

Anonymous said...

Okay, Rick, I was wrong. Mea culpa...Me, I go to the theatre, I go to see a play, I don't give a rat's bum about getting the scores there. But then I ain't been going to theatre in Kentucky for the last thirty-odd years, so what the Hell do I know? As always, my very opinionated posts come with the caveat that it's just one man's opinion.

And what's with this Mr. Pogue shit? Come, come, we're past such formality. Chuck or Pogue will do...or if you're just pissed off at me, "you dumb bastard, you!" will always do right nicely...

ReverendEddie said...

She did. It was amazing. They should make them in huge sheets so she can just rip off a yard and go to town.

Anonymous said...

I dunno the answer wither, Rick. But it might be a good topic for further discussion...
I would also like to point out theat my brackets are NOT burst, and that I have 11 of the sweet 16 still there and ALL FOUR of my final 4 teams still alive! Ya-hoo...
btw- didja SEE that UK game yesterday? I don't give a damn what the naysayers think, that was an awesome game and UCONN dodged a HUGE bullet! Those UK boys played with tremendous heart and I give them, especially Sparks, all the kudos in the world!

It will be like Bush being Pres...I love my country in many ways...BUT...
I love my Cats in many ways...BUT..

Notice the big BUTS...

And those are big BUTS that Sir Mix Alot WAS NOT speaking of

ReverendEddie said...

I've heard the RUMOURS tou. I seriously doubt anything like that is going to happen though. Florida louves Donovan, South Carolina louves Odom, and Kentucky......still louves the Tubster. Though he's on a shorter rope. Next season will be an extrememly imporant one in terms of seeing who's job will be safe.

Here's a quote from Coach K, which I find especially interesting considering recent comments about "Sports v. Art snobbery." In the quote, he's referring to allowing children to try different things, instead of forcing them into a "specialization" at an early age:

"So we have to try to figure out how to teach those things in this culture. Play a sport and do a play, or play a sport and be in a singing group. Try to figure out who the hell you are.''

I find it especially interesting (and I hate to say it, but it reflects well on the K-ster) that HE introduced the arts into the discussion. Before that comment, the topic was pretty much limited to sports.

Help me! I need an intervention...I almost like Coach K!!!

Anonymous said...

Uhh, ya SHOULD...he' probably the GREATEST COLLEGE COACH EVER!!!!
I know you KY natives hate Duke and all, but give the devil his due, baby! The man is a coaching mo-chine!

Anonymous said...

I don't think of him as the greatest basketball coach ever. I think of him as a leader. That's why my card is Chevy Express. I mean, that's why I drive an American S-10. No, wait, what am I shilling for now?

Aw, Tim, let me have my fun. Of course I respect the ol' Lemon Sucker. Can't argue with the record. But I'll still try!

Anonymous said...

Jus' tryin to get a rise out of you, my good man!

Anonymous said...

Yah, I know the x-man is a rabble rouser! And I have to admit, I'm an easy mark.

Tim, Rick, don't think I can hoop it up this weekend. Gotta get to work on the Trap...

When is March Madness officially over? Just asking. 'Cause personally, I can't effing wait.

Anonymous said...

I'm with you, Missy. So far though, March Madness & I have blithely ignored one another and I hope it will continue...though I would like my newspaper's front page to actually have real news on it, for a change.

Anonymous said...

March Madness provides the same emotional enjoyment, heartbreak and elation that I get from acting/stand up comedy. To some, it is meaningless, but for me, if something provides those thrilling moments of emotion, than I am into it. To a lesser extent, I am also into the McRib, whenever its in town.

Anonymous said...

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.....McRibbbbbbbbbb.....SOUTH BEAH , people...SOUTH BEACH!!!

How bout dem LSU Tigers? PICKED THAT UPSET baby! My final 8 is looking good!
