Mike and I were talking about this last night after reading your post. We were thinking of more "entertainment" moments, rather than news stories. And they may not be the best of all time, but they stick out in my mind. I was not alive for a lot of the historic stuff, but I do remember some fun stuff. So, along those lines, we talked about a few and here is my list, not in any real order:

1. The Newhart Halloween Show - the alien one. Know what I'm talking about - anyone except Mike? :)

2. The Cosby Show - "Night Time is the Right Time" scene

3. Cheers - wasn't there a food fight Thanksgiving scene? I'm sure I'm remembering that one fondly

4. Seinfeld - there are so many scenes I like, especially the "You stole my Jesus fish" scene and the "it moved" scene. A lot of other good ones that I can't pinpoint right now.

5. Everybody Loves Raymond - there is one scene that I always talk about. The timing is so great. Marie takes the plastic off the couch and they are all sitting there trying not to make a mess on it because she's looking over their shoulders. They are eating chips. The scene goes on for almost 2-3 minutes with no dialogue. It's great.

Other mentions....When Lucy is stuffing her face on the pastry line in I Love Lucy.

And, I can't go without mentioning 9-11 when I walked into the office at the school I was working at and they were gathered around the television. I had heard bits and pieces on my classroom radio and wanted to know what the hell was happening. I remember looking at the little screen and saying, "Where's the other tower?" And about that time, there goes the second one. And nobody moved. And nobody spoke. Not even Dan Rather. And I finally whispered, "Is this live?" I'll never forget that. But, then again, who will?

Oh, another honorable mention....

I wasn't so much into Friends, but loved the episode where Ross was supposed to be getting married to that one chick and in his vows he said, "I Ross take thee Rachel."

The show was overrated, but still a good moment.

Looks like this has gone more into the news/non-fiction end of things more than I was thinking. On that front, I think some of my faves are during Presidential or Vice-Presidential debates:

* "You're no Jack Kennedy." (Quayle looked like he had just swallowed a turd.)

* "I will not allow the youth and and inexperience of my opponent..." (Even Mondale laughed heartily at that.)

* Also liked Clinton's Arsenio Hall appearance, as well as his MTV "town hall" response, as opposed to a very poor showing by GWB and Perot.

* "The Day After" - I just remember we were talking about this for weeks after it aired. It's like the whole notion of the Cold War potential horror finally made us say, "Enough."

* Live Aid - This was important and some people we thought were cool were saying so.

* Letterman, first post-911 show. - Dave's best line ever (regarding the "religious" motivation behind the attacks): "I ask you, if you live to be a thousand years old, will that ever make any God-damn sense?"

On to the fluff:

* Gotta go with the Newhart Halloween episode Erin mentioned, the one with the "UFO" ("Hi, I'm Larry..." Followed by a full minute of audience side-splitting.)

* Buffy. I suppose there are 2 that really stick out and both are James Marsters moments. In "The Gift" season finale there is a shot of Spike starting to break down and cry when Buffy dies. It's brief but very well-placed. Then there is the final season moment when Spike drapes himself on a cemetary cross and his body begins to smolder. ("Can we rest now, Buffy?")

* WKRP - "Boooogerrrr!!"

* Finales certainly offer some "best" moments in almost any show. MASH and Newhart stand out.

1) The announcement of Elvis Presley's death. It was on our local news station. I was only eight and me and a friend were running through his house playing and all of a sudden a blue screen of death (before computers) appeared with the news typed in on the TV. No correspondants spoke. Eerie. We figured he had been electrocuted playing an electric guitar. True story.

2) Johnny Carson's farewell monologue.

3) The Challenger explosion.

4) The Final M*A*S*H*

5) When John Denver was nominated for the top country music award in the mid 70's. He won and a drunken or drugged up Charlie Rich burned the envelope in protest, with an oblivious and smiling Denver accepting via satellite.

Honorable mention:

*Gerald Ford falling down the long ass steps of Air Force One. I still laugh out loud at that.

1) 9/11- So incredible we all wondered if it was real when we first saw it. I'll never forget the site of NBC reporter Ashley Banfield literally saving people from being crushed by debris WHILE she was on the air live reportin. Still gives me the shivers when I see the footage...

2) 1st Bush/ Kerry debate in 04- Yeah, I know he lost but MAN was it awesome wathcing Bush get his ass handed to him in front of the entire country...unfortunately, enough people obviously weren't watching...

3) Finale of ANGEL- GREATEST finale ever! "Me, I wanna slay the dragon!' If you're a fan, you know what I mean!

4) LIVE AID- the MTV coverage from the daytime events was their finest hour as a network, and once again, something very powerful and meaningful to my generation. I'll never forget how they cut away from poor Bryan Adams in America to go live to London for u2! Good call!

5) Baseball all star game / 1994- Don't remember where it was played, but Meatloaf sang the national anthem. Now, I know ya'll know about how much I dig the Meat-man, but this was really something special. It was the first, and possibly the last, time I ever heard the anthem sang in such a way that a tear came to my eye. He absolutely belted it, but with no histrionics and crazy warbling,no 6 octave re-interpretations, no symphony orchestra backing him up... just the greatest National Anthem in the world, sang like it should be! It was a quick moment, but one I'll never forget.

(Let's try that again...)

Merry Xmas, bro:

An MP3 of Meat singing "Star Spangled..." at the AllStar Game. Entertainment Magazine said, "He didn't scratch and he didn't spit, he just belted the hell out of the country's national anthem!"

It is a bit lo-fi, but the file is pretty small, too. And, I repeat, the following link is an MP3 file. You can copy and paste this URL into the "File->Open URL" of Windows Media Player. After it plays, you'll be able to do a "Save As..."

If you have something other than MicroSuck's Media Player, that probably means you're smart enough to know how to drop this address into that player.
