The prize? Front row seats at this year's AGL SMITTY awards in beautiful downtown Sexington, KY!
And btw- Joy saw BROKEBACK this weekend and thought Michelle Williams was the bomb!
Aside from the Constant Gardener, Crash, Cinderella Man, and Good Night & Good Luck...I haven't seen anything. I've hoping my Guilds would send me a few screeners...but all I've gotten is Crash (twice, from both SAG & WGA) and Cinderella Man (WGA). I'm going to have to do some heavy viewing before Oscar time.
Jeez.
All I've seen this year was Wallace and Gromit. Go ahead and give it to them. Why not.
Aw,the heck with the Oscars themselves. We need a poll afterwards for Best/Worst Dressed, which is all anybody really cares about anyway. Well, that, and how skinny Renee Zell is this year and whether she's got a date, now that Kenny is out of the picture (and perhaps visiting Brokeback Mt? Hmmm.)
And, not to get all huffy on your actor ass, but your post neglects to include the design awards. Or maybe you just didn't want to type all that at 7:00 in the morning. Understandable, but still. Costumes? Production design? Cinematography? Make-up? What up?
And I'm not voting, because I don't believe in competition among artists. But if I win, I'll send a Native American to accept my award. Her name is "Dances With Smittys."
Renee will turn up skinny and pale with a weird orange glow on her face and all the rags will say she is gorgeous.
Charlize Theron will show up skinny and sunkissed and they will talk about her brave performance as another normal ugly woman.
Felicity Huffman will show up skinny and mannish and arm in arm with her elf hubby.
Michelle Williams will show up sunkissed and full breasted and arm and arm with Heath who will be ragged and dodgy. Neither will win. BUT they WILL be competing angainst Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillipe for darn cutest couple. Ryan will be ragged and dodgy but Reese will be pale, slender, and well put together.
Ang Lee will win, but the gay cowboys will lose. The Cash's will win but hustlers and transvestites will go home empty handed.
The Oscar goes to...the safe bet.
Those are my predictions.
From hearing all the hype, Brokeback will probably take most everything it is nominated for.
I wonder why it has taken Hollywood so long to come out with, and "Oscarize", a movie dealing with this subject matter. After all, marital infidelity has been around for centuries hasn't it?
I hope Terrence Howard wins, but I think Ledger will come out a head. So to speak.
Actress: Felicity Huffman
Somebody needs to go ahead and give Giamatti an Oscar so he can burn out and have one of those wacked out hair-do police photos (ala Nick Nolte and others).
Supporting Actress: Williams, probably.
Jennifer Carpenter (Exorcism of Emily Rose) should have been nominated at least. She fuckin' rocked in that pic. No special effects for her and no long, drawn out cryin' jag.
Ang Lee said Brokeback was a return to form of his film school days. Simple may very well be better.
Foreign Film: Paradise Now.
Adapted Screeplay: Munich upsets Brokeback by taking home the trophy.
Original Screenplay: Crash
Animated Feature: Corpse Bride
What's a SMITTY?

WHOO-HOO- Can't wait to see who wins that SOUND MIXING Oscar!!!
ATTA BOY!!!
Oh, and The Smittys are AGL's yearly awards. And, lest I be misunderstood, I was being semi-sarcastic about the artist/competition thing. I've got my one Smitty--in fact, I'm the recipient of the first one ever given out--and am damn proud of it. I've been to many Smitty ceremonies over the years, and enjoy seeing everyone's work rewarded, even if it is "just" a local non-red-carpet event.
I'll probably stay glued to the TV for the entire Oscar show. But, really, all these awards on TV become meaningless after awhile, don't they? The Peoples' Choice Awards? The MTV awards? Come on! It's just the big Hollywood machine doing its crank-up-the-box-office thing. Hey, maybe this would be a good topic for a discussion, Tim? Something about competition, and awards, and...well, you're the blogmaster.
My Smitty makes a great dust catcher. And paperweight.
Oh yeah??? Well MY Smitty makes...Oh wait, that's right...I NEVER GOT ONE!!!!!!
Don't make me get the hose out, $!
Here are my predictions...and I'm usually right on the money.
Best Picture: If Brokeback doesn't win...and I think it might not...then Crash will pick up the prize.
Best Director: Ang Lee....hands down. A small possibility that Paul Haggis (Crash) could win.
Best Actress: It's a race between Reese Witherspoon and Felicity Huffman. I think Witherspoon will win. She's got the whole Sissy Spacek I'm playing a musical legend, and learned how to play an instrument and did my whole vocals thing going for her. Plus, she was pretty damn good
Best Actor: Hands DOWN...Philip Seymour Hoffman. There's no way around it. He's won every major award for best actor this year. He will win.
Best Supporting Actress:
Rachel Weisz for Constant Gardner. She's pretty hard to beat. Amy McAdams could be the darkhorse however.
Best Supporting Actor: It's a fight between Clooney and Giamatti. Don't forget William Hurt, he's pretty amazing in Violence.
Let's hope Dolly wins best original song for "Travelin Thru".
Best Original Screenplay: Crash...or Syriana. Both are DAMN good scripts.
Best Adapted Screenplay: Constant Gardner or A History of Violence. Violence should have picked up more noms in my opinion.
Dances With Smittys says she's appalled. Intrigued, but appalled.
She wants to know if this is what the white man does for amusement, this yanking of...awards. If so, she wonders if she might join you in your teepee to witness the yanking of the rhymes-with-teepee.
Okay, I'll stop. Who wants join the Guess-Renee's-Weight pool?
I'll join that pool - are we saying now? Or is she porking up for another movie where she plays a squinty-eyed girl who shows the world what she can do?
Sorry. I'm just not a fan of hers.
And all I can say is...Damn. Mike and I need to get to the movies more.
I still haven't made it all the way through "The English Patient". All this artsy-fartsy stuff makes my Smitty flaccid anyway.
But, that's about the only thing that does. Thus, why *we* haven't seen more movies.
I feel "flaccid" about the whole awards machine...at least right now.
Oscar night I will most likely be sitting four inches from the tv screen, drinking a cocktail and eating up every moment. I mean it's the OSCARS baby....(many of our secret dreams contain images of "I want to thank the academy...)
However, I am with Missy and Adam on this one.
Good clothes?Bad clothes? and Wallace and Grommit rocks..
So my picks are whatever Shayne says...I trust him. I will not think independently. And besides...I've only seen a few of the films.
As far as awarding acting and tech work....I love the Smitty's. I went to many...and won nothing...and then I won two. I will not be humble about this...and gracious....
IT"S DAMN FUN TO BE APPRECIATED.
Mike, that is nasty.
I just remember that the one Smitty Awards I went to, Diva in FL sang (imitating the show we had been in) - and then apologized afterwards :)
Had the most fun afterwards outside at one of the tables, drinking and smoking, etc etc etc.
JAL666 - he IS nasty :)
Ha!!
Yes, anytime I sing...I feel responsible for the ears I may have damaged....and being that I cannot sing like the lovely Drama Mama...I felt obliged to apologize.. plus she looked very good in her lingerie and was so confident...I, on the other hand, looked up in horror at two of my students parents in the front row right before I had to flash the audience in MY lingerie to make fun of Drama Mama's show...it was mildly humilating....I have nothing but respect for a woman who can, night after night, sing in her skivvies...and missyj. in XXX Love Act...goodness!!!....but speaking of parodies...Wasn't Billy Crystal the best at that business???I love parodies.
Imiss ALL the good SMITTY ceremonies! All I got was Rick, Steve and Scott (NO lingerie!) and a 5$ glass of wine! My, the times are a changin!
FYI, there's an interesting few posts on the AGL blog regarding this year's Smittys. Check out the September archive.
Hey all-
Finally saw WALK THE LINE this weekend....Reese was AWESOME and I could totally see that performance garnering an Oscar. Phoenix was very good as well, in a tough role (playing such a recognizable icon as CASH) Good flick overall. I give it a Thumbs up!
I agree wholeheartedly with Rick. If you've got a beef, be an adult and sign your name to it.
A complaint cloaked in anonymity is gutless and also nullifies any legitimacy your gripe might've have.
Bit chickenshit, donncha think! If you don't have the courage to stand up for your own opinion by giving it an identity; what else can't you stand up for?
The Aristocrats! Yeaaa! Almost forgot!
New Topic please...
Yo, Timmy!
Just found out you had a blog! Nice going, Porthos!
Sorry couldn't audition for Earnest, but between Lion in Winter and work, well, you know the rest of the story...
Hello to everyone else, including some people I haven't seen in quite a while!
And since I'm commenting on an Oscar post, I must admit haven't seen a one of 'em....yet.
Later,
Tom Phillips

LAURIE!!
ADAM!! TIM!! RICK!!! All ya'lls.
Hey i am going to be in town on the 7th of April....
What's a-happening that weekend?
Adam!!!
Laurie!!!
Missy!!!
EVERYONE!
Hey, back from ACTF and have I got soe stories! More later...
BTW- Scotty, I did NOT write the post in question, as I always sign my name to anything I post- the post is obviously a referal to some less than flatering things said on the AGL blog-
And it also wasn;t my buddy Fletch , who often posts anonymously to bug me, as he lives in TN and knows nothing of AGL - but while we're at it, don't call people names- even anonymous people- on my blog. I don;t like that even one little bit. Anyone is free to post here, and can choose to sign or not to sign-and should be able to without fear of being called gutless...
nuff said.
Tim, I apologize if I broke the etiquette of your posting boards by my remarks about anonymous posters, which I think were made in general. But I'll be a good boy and bite my tongue in the future. It's your site.
It's not a big deal to me if people post anonymously or not; except in the case where they take shots at other people while veiled in anonymity...which I felt was clearly the intent of the anonymous poster posting about the Smittys.
I felt he was trying to stir up an old controversy (as apparently you felt, as well) on the Actors Guild blog that had got nipped in the bud a long time ago (quite rightly by Rick) and send everyone over there to read those "less than flattering" comments.
Obviously a discussion of the Smittys' merits is fair game, but, for me at least, someone has to stand behind an opinion before I'll consider giving it any credible weight...particularly one that harbours snide complaints and is trying to fuel an attack on someone...in this case, Rick.
Personally, I've always found anonymous posting actually encourages more trash talking, name-calling, and bad manners on posting boards. If you don't have to take responsibility for what you say, you're more liable to abuse the privilege.
But all that aside, my own opinion of the Smittys (which I've discussed with Rick) is that I find a theatre having an award ceremony for itself a bit self-congratulatory and self-indulgent.
It would be one thing if these were awards for the entire theatre community in the area, but when the theatre is only in competition with itself isn't it a bit like slapping one's self on the back? I just don't see the point.
No problem, Charles. Wasn't trying to single you out either, just didn't want people "piling on", so to speak. And yes, anonymous "shit -stirrers" kinda piss me off, as well...
Laurie,
What's happening that weekend? WE ARE ALL GOING TO HANG OUT!! That is what.
Sweet.
Your momma!
Tim, I wish this was me, but alas................
Tim, I really liked the Austin model you presented at yesterday's meeting. Something to shoot for.
Thanks, CHarles. I have liked the way that organization is set up for some time. I think that yesterday was the first step to gettting this plan underway. Thanks to you and Julianne and all who turned out yesterday!0
