"I can put on any Face. You won't know me but, it's no disgrace"

SOOOO- first off- a little business: For all interested parties, the AGL New Horizons play series will kick off May 9th with a reading of my original play DANCING WITH DANI. Show time will be 7:30 at the DAC and , as always, admission is free. For more info, shoot me an email at woundedeagle8@yahoo.com- cast members lined up thus far include Chris Rose, Shayne Brakefield, Mike Tuttle and Erin Adams. Check it out!

Ok, so I promised Chuck a nice fun, non-confrontational topic for this entry! And I think we're about due one! SOOO....here goes:
Who are your FIVE FAVORITE ACTORS of all time? The key word here is FAVORITE! DOn't necessarily have to make a case that they're the best, just the ones you dig...and with all due respect to the ladies, we'll save them for the next post. Let's deal with the men-folk first.
So who's it gonna be ? Larry Olivier? Marlon Brando? Don Johnson? Jimmy "DY-NO-MITE" Walker?
You name it...
A cool 10,000 pts for the reference! You may have to bite your "tongues" when you find out who it is (HINT HINT!)

Favourite actors. Had to think on this a moment. What constitutes a favourite? I figure those whose work I've seen a lot of, whose work I revisit a lot and whose work I never get tired of; whose films I buy...still there were a lot who come close, but I ended up with these five in no particular order of preference:

1)PETER O'TOOLE
...definitive performances for me: BECKET; LION IN WINTER; LAWRENCE OF ARABIA; GOODBYE, MR. CHIPS;
THE RULING CLASS; MY FAVOURITE YEAR

2)GARY GRANT
...definitive performances for me: HOLIDAY; PHILADELPHIA STORY; THE AWFUL TRUTH; GUNGA DIN; PENNY SERENADE

3)GARY COOPER
...Definitive performances for me: BEAU GESTE; LIVES OF A BENGAL LANCER; MEET JOHN DOE; MR. DEEDS GOES TO TOWN; THE FOUNTAINHEAD; DESIRE

4)RONALD COLMAN
...definitive performances for me: THE LIGHT THAT FAILED; IF I WERE KING; PRISONER OF ZENDA; LUCKY PARTNERS; RANDOM HARVEST

5)LAURENCE OLIVIER
...definitive performances for me: RICHARD III; REBECCA; DANCE OF DEATH; SLEUTH; LONG DAY'S JOURNEY INTO NIGHT; PRIDE & PREJUDICE; KHARTOUM; SPARTACUS; UNCLE VANYA

HONOURABLE MENTION: I'm sorry, I know it's only five, but on another day, given my mood, he could have aced one of the others out for a top spot and what he could do very few others could:

ERROL FLYNN
...definitive performances for me: THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD; DAWN PATROL; THEY DIED WITH THEIR BOOTS ON; THE SEAHAWK; CAPTAIN BLOOD; GENTLEMAN JIM

(no order of importance)

Robert Duvall
Sam Rockwell
John Turturro
Sean Penn
Robin Williams

Very difficult...I'll change my mind in less than 5 minutes....

I too have difficulty with "favorites" of almost anything. It's easier for me to list who I hate. More fun, too. So, I asked myself, "What names, when you see them in a trailer, make you eager to see a movie?"

* - Benicio Del Torro

* - Paul Giamatti

* - Gabriel Byrne

* - Steve Buscemi

* - Kevin Spacey

I know, I just named half the cast of "The Usual Suspects". No wonder I love that movie. All of the above have done some stinkers, but overall I generally like their judgment in project choices. Or, at worst, I think they have enough power to spice up an otherwise-crap film.

Johnny Depp-say what you will, the kid from Owensboro can act his ass off.

Laurence Olivier-magnetic limey bastard!

John Hurt--he keeps getting better and better.

Gary Oldman--one word: Commitment

Alfred Molina--one of the greatest character actors of all time!

are we going to to have an best actress thread later?

I like
Laura Linney
Helen Mirren
Judi Dench
Miranda Richardson
and
DAKOTA FANNING!!!!
(thought I forgot, didn't you?)

Great list, Adam! Certainly while not on my all-time favs, of the current crop I love your choices. Johnny Depp may be the best actor working today. Alfred Molina and Oldman I have long been a fan of.

I (well, not I personally, but my producer and director) had the distinction of turning Alfred Molina down for the small role of the cabbie in my Holmes adaption of The Hound of the Baskervilles. I was trying to figure out why he was even auditioning, considering at the time he was starring in the West End production of the musical, Destry Rides Again. What I didn't know at the time, of course, was that small part probably was the worth a week's salary starring in the West End.

I later met him in a Costco in Glendale, California (a suburb of LA) and, first, I think he was surprised to be recognized; second, I reminded him of the story above. I had just seen him in a production of ART out there. Very nice fellow. Actually, that Costco is good for meeting actors...I met Harry Groener out there once too.

I would definately give a big nod (and a long sexy kiss) to Johnny..he's not only pretty to look at but damn good as well.
(Sigh...I remember the days of 21 Jump Street...I only watched it cuz of him...but I was, like 12, man.) Mmmmmm....just look at him now...honest, great range! (I was born in Owensboro too!!)
Alfred Molina is great too...intellgent and passionate on screen.
And, Mr. Luckey, no doubt with Gary Oldman!
And Tuttle- I agree with your list whole heartedly...more of my "favourites!"
Plus- Many of my favorite Lex actors are all on this blog... Mr. Luckey, Mr. Brakefield, Mr.X, Mr. B....nods to all of u as well

I must apologize for my horrible spelling...I am typing fast in between things and my typing does not always match my brain..

Milona is brilliant in The Impostors. As is most of the cast, actually.
I think it is really cool that his first film was in Raiders of the Last Ark. His story about filming the scene with all the terantulas on his back is great. (check out the bonus DVD of the Indy trilogy box set) And he should have thrown him the whip!!
He is one of the best parts of Boogie Nights too.

I'll forgive him for "Not Without My Daughter." But I'll just chalk it up as another convincing character that he has embodied.

Anonymous said...

Have you ever seen him with your other fave, Gary Oldman, in PRICK UP YOUR EARS, the story of playwright Joe Orton (Oldman) and his male lover (Molina) who killed him with a hammer? Fine film! fine performances!

Anonymous said...

The above is not anonymous. It's me! Pogue!

Anonymous said...

I'll throw these five out in no particular order:

Steve McQueen- I too love Paul Newman, but everybody has him, so I'll go with another fave from that era, Mr. Steve. I've loved him ever since I first saw the GREAT ESCAPE as a kid. He was rugged and genuine.

Robert Duvall- He's so good, he even makes bad movies watchable (see DAYS OF THUNDER) if you haven't already, se THE APOSTLE.

Andre Brauer- A highly underrated dramatic actor, and from his film work you mihgt not realize how powerful he is, but just watch one episode of HOMICIDE: LIFE ON THE STREET for proof of the punch this cat packs.

Sean Penn- HEY BUD! LETS PARTY!!!!To me, THIS is the finest actor of my generation (with all apologies to Mr Depp) I think Sean Penn's range is staggering- see DEAD MAN WALKING if you have any doubts. I just hope he doesn't go down DeNiro's path, and wind up doing nothing but shit as he gets older.

David Morse- Why this guy doesn't get more dap is beyond me. He's fantastic- very real and genuine. See THE CROSSING GUARD for proof (Directed by Sean Penn, no less)

Anonymous said...

Tim, I've heard Sean Penn say (more than once) that anymore, he takes acting roles to make enough money to allow him to pursue the projects that he has a real passion for. So he may turn out to be Bradnoesque or DeNiroesque in that regard, although so far I think he chooses roles that end up more of a hit than a miss (or even worse, a mail-in).

Bob

Anonymous said...

Tim, Was David Morse also in The Green Mile? If it's the guy, yeah, I like him too, his "dap"lessness boggles me. And Ander Brauer, Gary Oldman, Giamatti, Byrne, Spacey, Del Toro, Molina and Hurt....man this is even tougher that I initially expected. Now I wanna go watch a bunch of movies...

Anonymous said...

That's the guy (Green mile)

Anonymous said...

Jeremy Irons
Robert Duvall
Billy Bob Thornton
William Macy
William Hurt

And...Richard Chamberlain!!!!

Anonymous said...

And...Rutger Hauer!!!

Well, if Missy can have seven, I'm adding to my list:

ROBERT MITCHUM

...definitive performances:
OUT OF THE PAST; NIGHT OF THE HUNTER; BLOOD ON THE MOON; RACHEL & THE STRANGER; PURSUED; FAREWELL, MY LOVELY

Anonymous said...

Yes! Lee and Burt both in THE PROFESSIONALS. Lee also in SEVEN MEN FROM NOW; Burt in The CRIMSON PIRATE & THE FLAME & THE ARROW.

Hi, Batfans!

Well, it's almost May. ( May, the month of yes-you-may. That lusty month when everyone goes blissfully astray. At least in Camelot.) So here's your timely reminder of our upcoming gig at Natasha's Cafe on Friday, May 12. We'll play two shows, now officially entitled The Dinner Show and The Cocktail Show. The 7:30 Dinner Show will seat from 6:00 to 7:15, and the 10:00 Cocktail Show will seat at 9:30. Each of you will not only have a reserved seat, you'll also have a ticket to prove it. This is a new procedure implemented by the folks at Natasha's and approved by The Bats. Please bear with us as we work out all the kinks, as we're trying to make Bat Mania a bit more manageable and orderly for everyone, especially YOU, our loyal and insistent fans.

For a full explanation of this new ticket system, please visit our website, www.thebats.net, and link to Bat Cave, then click on Main Chat, and then on Ticketing Rules. You'll even see a place where you can exchange your tickets with Batfans who either want to buy or sell theirs. And please, no scalping!!! Not that we think for a minute that you would. Let's see how it goes for this show, and then give us and/or Natasha's your feedback.

Make your reservations at 259-2754, or on the Natasha's website, www.beetnik.com. If you've already made reservations, you'll be hearing from the crew at Natasha's shortly about your tickets.

And by the way, there will be no Bats flying in June, but you can come see the wonderful DesChamps Band at Natasha's on Friday, June 2, instead! This is Missy's favorite young band, four adorable boys from South Carolina/New Orleans/Austin who will just melt your heart, pump up your hormones, and set your feet to tapping with their string music. Downbeat is at 9:00, and cover is a piddly $5. This is DesChamps' fourth trip to Lexington, and they're building quite a following here, so make your reservations early. Sample their music, much of it original tunes, at www.deschampsband.com. They're just too darn cute!

We won't lie, we ate the whole Derby Pie.

Chuck,
Robert Mitchum was the bomb! Loved him in the John Wayne flick with him and James Cann (Rio Bravo? Can't keep alot of those straight)
Alos loved THUNDER ROAD...for obvious reasons (see my Bruce Springsteen addiction!)

Anonymous said...

I think it's either Rio Lobo or El Dorado, both of which are Howard Hawks basically re-making Rio Bravo, which is still the best version and is in the pantheon of great westerns...the Duke, Dean Martin, Walter Brennan, Ward Bond, Angie Dickinson, and, yes, believe it or not, Ricky Nelson. Claude Akins and John Russell (The Lawman) as the bad guys.

It was Hawks' and the Duke's answer to High Noon which they both hated because they felt a professional...Cary Cooper, the sheriff...should not go around asking help from amateurs. I kinda agree with them. High Noon has never done much for me.

Hey Tim,

My name is John and I'm a friend of Tuttle's. I've been reading for awhile and decided that this was a prime opportunity for me to throw in my first two cents worth. So, with your permission, here's my list. It was hard to pick just five out of dozens I consider first among equals. But I felt that these five were the ones I would forsake all others to see. These are the guys who stay the surfing hand. They are in no particular order.

1. John Wayne

rationale- The comfort zone. You always know what your gonna get with The Duke.

favorites- The Searchers, McClintock, The Quiet Man, Rio Bravo

2. Marlon Brando

rationale- Whether he's young and brilliant or old and doddering, I simply can't turn away. He fascinates me.

favorites- Waterfront, Streetcar, Godfather, Tango, The Score.

3. George C. Scott

rationale- Was there a more powerful screen presence in the 20th century? I'm not convinced. He also was the greatest Ebenezer Scrooge ever.

favorites- The Hustler, Patton, A Christmas Carol.

4. William Powell

A charming leading man largely overlooked in recent years. One of, if not the first actors who could pull off smart-ass in a serious film.

favorites- The Thin Man, My Man Godfrey, Life With Father, Mister Roberts.

And last, but most certainly not least...

5. Harpo Marx

rationale- Ever hear the one that goes: "If a mime is in the forest and a tree falls on him, does anybody care?" Harpo Marx was the exception that proved the rule. For my money, narrowly edges out his younger brother for most brilliant comedic talent of all time.

Honorable mention:

Jeff Bridges- quite possibly the most underrated actor of his generation. He's just solid.

Groucho Marx- I told you I was big on the Marx Brothers...

William Shatner- A guilty pleasure. I can't help it. He cracks me up. Even when he isn't trying to.

So, there it is. Rip me up. Throw me to the wolves. Acually, I love everyone that has already been mentioned. This was fun. I'm already thinking about my actress list.

Later.

I have to throw another on here. Phillip Seymour Hoffman.

This guy is the reason I am going to see Mission Impossible 3. The only reason, but it is enough. I have a feeling that the MI series will become a Bond sort of series. Eventually they will replace Cruise with a new guy and just keep going. For junk food film, I'd take that.

Anonymous said...

Lots of wonderful names cropping up...Bill Powell, a wonderful neglected actor; The Marx Brothers; Buster Keaton (who I think I prefer too, Rick; That house falling down around him...Though Charlie was no slouch...); The Duke...you can't top Stagecoach; The Searchers; and The Quiet Man...

Rick, I know I've seen some rappers act and I even probably liked their performances...I just couldn't tell you which ones (by the by, thanks for the mellow period pre-show music tonight...I know it was all vaguely baseball themed but it sure nice for my geezer ears to hear a Big Band...got me in the mood for the show).

And while I'm at a big plug for ROUNDING THIRD, both Adam and Scott are terrific. Julieanne and I laughed and laughed and we also found it touching. A fine show!

Anonymous said...

Tim, Burning Coal looks like a very interesting company. How unusual is it for two brothers to both be in theatre? Have you ever worked with the company?

Anonymous said...

Never been able to, as their season runs concurrent with my University work, and they pretty much go dark during my vacation time. If I ever get a sabatical...
Actually, all three of us are in Theatre, as Jerry's twin brother Tony runs a sucessful high school theatre program in Tennessee. Thus, as I'm fond of saying, we all have l0ove for our work...but the three of us together don't have a pot to piss in!

DIVA MASTER said...

Damn this is hard....

Al Pacino
Gary Oldman
Tom Wilkinson
Robert Duvall
Brad Dourif- Dourif has mostly small and supporting roles in fairly crappy movies (The Exorcist III, Graveyard Shift), but I think he's awesome even in the bad ones.

Anonymous said...

Rick and Tim,

What I love is the eclectic and dangerous chocies of plays:

Miss Julie
Accidental Death of an Anarchist
Godot
Juno & the Paycock ( I love this play)
A Doll's House
The Weir
Night & Day
Rat In the Skull
Shakespeare

Good stuff!

ReverendEddie said...

We did a wretched reading of Accidental Death of an Anarchist by Dario Fo last year at Natasha's. A good play but a bad "production."
Godot is one of my all time favorites. I was in an unforgettable performance (for me, at least) of Godot at Transy in 1994.
Love to see someone do that show again.
AGL needs some Shakespeare, too.

Lazymom said...

***Daniel Day Lewis.....i just love intelligent, talented, dark, slightly arrogant men. Im glad he only pops up every few years.

***Jimmy Stewart.....effortless and honorable

***Ewan MacGregor....Once upon a time he was my badboy now he is my "only hope".

***Sam Elliot..... for every cowboy, biker, asskicking rugged man "throw me up against a wall and have his way with me" fantasy ....um, nevermind

*** Cillian Murphy.....new favorite who stunned my in 28 Days Later then freaked me out in every movie since. Could he be my "new" Ewan.......

Now tv aCtors.....a different list altogether.....wont get into here...

also i must make a seperate list of slightly balding older men who i just love (i think this is some slightly gross Freudian like attachment stemming from father issues?)
*Robert Duvall
*Lance Henrikssen
*Terry (dude from Lost and Millenium)
*Andre Braugher
*Mitch Pellegi

Hey everyone...any suggestions for monologues for me. I have an audition at Florida Rep on the 15th...need two contrasting pieces.
I would be gald to give out a fax number or email.
I just haven't had a good piece in a while...(that sounded dirty!!)

Zhivago,
I, too, love Christian Bale- He was a hir from making my list...and I took LOADS of grief for my love of EMPIRE OF THE SUN...welcome to the club.
Oh...btw- who are you?

Anonymous said...

Come around me some time, Tim. I'll give you loads of grief for EMPIRE OF THE SUN too. Spielberg in his PONDEROUS, I-AM-DOING-IMPORTANT-WEIGHTY-WORK-HERE-GIVE-ME-AN-AWARD-PLEASE mode. Note to Steven: Every scene in a movie can't be...A MOMENT! Maintaining the Balance is everything.

Anonymous said...

Chuck, you've already given me this grief once! Check the archives...
I love the film, though. It's a bit long, and a tad heavy handed , but there ARE some great moments and some fine performances. (I don't think I've ever seen a finer performance from a child actor, with the exception of Jamie Bell in BILLY ELLIOT)
the end of that film is one of the most emotional scenes I;ve ever seen on film...
but I'm just an old softy!

Anonymous said...

Well, at least you didn't say you liked his soppy, sappy, over-indulgent, homo-erotic paean to boyhood, HOOK. If you DO like it, don't tell me!

Anonymous said...

God no...hated HOOK. It was wretched...

Anonymous said...

That movie makes me nauseated

Maybe I could do a monologue based on one of Julia Robert's Tinkerbell speeches...that will get me a gig at Florida Rep..

By the way, thanks for the email X...u are my friend.

I know it's off-topic, but I need some information, which I am just too damned lazy to research on the internet (I'm also pressed for time). What are the hottest expensive sports cars right now? If you were a rich man's son, what would you be driving? Don't need a lot of answers, just a few good names.

The Drama Mama said...

I'm so late answering this! But, oh well. Here goes.....

1. David Morse - this dude needs to be in more movies

2. Paul Giamatti - "I'm not drinking any fucking merlot!"

3. Kevin Spacey - I'll watch almost anything this guy is in

4. Mel Gibson - yes, I'll admit it. I've always loved blue-eyes Mel.

5. Now for older choices.....Gene Kelly (what a dancer), Cary Grant, and Humphrey Bogart.

ReverendEddie said...

Chuck, you want a McClaren F1. It ain't really new, but it still is the cream of the crop. Introduced in 1993, McLaren F1 is, by far, the world's most expensive supercar and the fastest one as well.

Designed as a Formula 1 for 2 (or even 3) McLaren F1 feautures a 6.0lt. BMW engine that can reach 60mph (97km/h) in 3.1 seconds. The car incorporates many world firsts for a road car: a fully carbon fibre monocoque structure, fully active fan-assisted ground effect aerodynamics, a central driving position with two offset rear passenger seats.

The car's production has now stopped, after only some more than 100 F1s were built. So you have to try the used car market in order to get your hands on the world's fastest car...
