"For that lean, mean, mean green"

So happy hump day all! Hope everyone's having a great week so far. I have now officially started my new job. I am the coordinator for the new Theatre and Film program at Bluegrass Community and Technical college here in Lex. I'll miss K-state, as I had some really good years there and I am damned proud of what we were able to accomplish there. Now I turn that program over to Jack Parrish, whom directed me in ART a few years back. He came highly recommended courtesy of Rick8, thus I have all the faith in the world that he'll take care of my baby...but I gotta tell you, it's REALLY nice not to have to make that commute every day to Frankfort! Hoozah! Maybe now I'll only have to spend ONE hundred dollars a week for gas! Won't that be a joy? And speaking of Joy, she, the little wolverine and I are MOVING! Yes, we finally done went and bouught us a house! We should have it all signed sealed and delivered by the end of the month! We are very excited, as we really HATE living in an apartment at this point in our lives! It's a very exciting time, and for those of you in Lex town, we'll be having a nice big open house party sometime in September. Stay tuned for more info...
..and SPEAKING of large outlays of cash...I need to pick the brains of those of you with any financial acumen. I am looking for funding sources for my new program. Any ideas? Any thoughts on how to raise/get some good working capital for this exciting new program? Gimmie your thoughts...(D$ and Darren, love to hear any ideas you may have used in the past as well! And most definitely if Steve K is lurking, shoot me some ideas...)
2 million points for the reference...I bet even CHuck knows this one!

X and all,

Wow! I come back from 5 days in PA and NYC, and find that I missed some hilarious stories. The colostomy bag thing...give me pigeon sh*t any day.

Tim, congrats on the new house. That is indeed a big deal. What part of town are you in? So many good changes for you these days.
Yippee!

Afraid I have no funding hints. Now that I'm (still) unemployed, I'm finding out how tight things really are out there.

Best of luck. Looking forward to seeing what your students produce.

No, even Chuck doesn't know. When you start having Cole Porter or Noel Coward lyrics, maybe.

Nor, alas, do I have any funding ideas. I'm in the Arts, for Christ's sake! You think I know about funding (Besides which, as I am now on the BOD of Actors Guild...any money-raising brainstorms I might remotely have, go to them...I think it's in the by-laws!).

Congrats on the home, you will find that in addition to the joys of home ownerships come the pains-in-the-ass of home ownership, BUT...still better than apartment living!

Huzzah for the X's!!!

Congrats on las casa! If you ever need help or advice with your new home, dont hesitate to ask. I do have a "little" experience with home repair and improvment. (and tools!)

As for money... well we are ALL scrambling for it.

I have to agree with Charles, I have to play this close to the chest with my job too. I do have some advice and ideas for you but cannot put them on the web for all to see. My employer would not be to happy.

If you get a chance come by the workplace and I can talk to you there and show you how we do it.
You can bring your child if needed. We love kids and have plenty to keep them occupied.

JUst this small aivice. You are not asking for a donation, You are selling something. If you need new lighting, an entire production, letterheard, whatever... You HAVE to show them what their money is buying. You are in compition with evryone else so you have to stand out from the heard. For every item you should have a presentation complete with bells, whistles, and the ANSWER to every concivable question they may ask.

---------------------------------
MISSY - Come apply at the Explorium (formally the Children's Museum) We are looking for teachers, etc. I dont know what they pay but it's a thought.

Hey X,

Congrats on starting the new job AND the home ownership routine! (Gotta love that tax break on the interest.) I've worked on several occasions with folks from BCTC, and they're good people, so I think you'll have a great time over there.

I don't have any experience getting arts funding, or really in soliciting private donations, but for the past year I've been learning the ways of grantwriting for education (from private foundations and the federal government) so I'll talk about that. (If you did a lot of this at KSU, then disregard!) I totally agree with Russell that you're selling something to the funder. You have to show them explicitly how their money is going to be used. Foundations have missions that guide their funding distribution; having a clear understanding of that mission will help you write your grant so that you're talking to their interests (and showing how your mission aligns with theirs). Be crystal clear in explaining what you're proposing to do with their money, and if you're following questions from an application, make absolutely sure you're answering what they're asking. This is where it's important to have others review your grants for clarity -- as well as typos and convoluted organization. I'm happy to help with this!

Thanks Nat...and yes, thankfully I WON'T have to type the grants! (lol) ...or at least not without lots of proofreading!
Adam- OJAYS IT IS!!! (and yes, Chuck, they also did BACKSTABBERS - a really groovy one- along with LOVE TRAIN)
THis advice and info is good guys. If anyone has more, keep it coming!

RUSSELL,
Thanks for the tip! I'll see what's up over there. It'd sure be an easy commute.

BTW, The Bats do "Love Train," and people always get up and form a conga line. Great song.

Just got back from Frank Black: Unplugged! Youz all missed one hell of a show.

Lou, I got rid of it. It wasn't doing it for me. No need for it, really.

Too bad Adam..but if you ever feel the need for a tirade, feel free to have it here at the Clones!
Damn, the Dame is getting some great shows this month...the YAYHOOS are playing Wednesday and those boys flat out ROCK! (Dan Baird ex of the Georgia Satallites and Eric Amble ex of the Del Lords...) Sigh...if only I were ten years younger!

I understand...but it was fun while it lasted...sigh. Maybe I'll start one and see if it does it for me.

Anyhoo- wish I was there...Lexvegas actually gets some good music...Ft. Misery is DEVOID of music.

But there is a killer venue in St. Pete called Jannus Landing. We go there on occasion. We've seen Big Head Todd, Donna the Buffalo, Yonder Mtn. and we are going to see that little punk ass G-Love next month. I can't help it. I love him.

BTW- I'm going to see UK play UF at UF in Sept. anyone want to road trip?? Really- I 'm partially going just to be in UK blue in a sea of Orange and FL blue. Should be trippy.

Southern Culture on the Skids will be at the Dame in October. These guys are great live. It should be a fun evening of high octane whiskey drinking.

Hey Adam, source of musical info that you are, when/where is Tom Waits playing around here? I love that guy.

Perhaps in a package tour with Lou Reed?

I did actually get to see Tom Waits--and it was 25 or so years ago, come to think of it--in Dallas. He brought a stripper onstage at one point. Leon Redbone opened.

I guess I'll be 75 before he comes around again. Damn.

Leon Redbone/Tom Waits! What a dynamic duo!

I never saw Tom in concert, but I would occasionally see him come into The Formosa on Santa Monica Blvd. It was a preferred watering hole for both of us.

I also ran into him once coming out of a 7/11 on the same Blvd (he was going in). Chatted for a few minutes, got to tell him I thought he was a real poet. He was quite friendly and pleased with the compliment, expressing his gravelly-voiced thanks for it.
