I don't think this is my favorite one ever, but I've remembered it for years so it deserves some credit. Milli Vanilli did a commercial for Carefree gum. They were singing and dancing and one of the guys jumped and then it shows the record player skipping, while one of them blows a bubble. In that time era, it was hillarious.

Here are a couple of oldies: Mean Joe Green and the little boy in the Coke commercial. (I *am* a product of the 70s.) I remember seeing an outtake where Green let out the most amazing burp after downing the whole bottle. The "1984" Apple commercial also stuck with me. Great dystopian setup -- and the Macintosh will save us!

More recently, though, I laughed my ass off at the "catherding" commercial a couple years ago (was that for some investment firm?). Maybe it's funnier when you live with 4 cats and you really do have to try to herd them. The shot of the rough cowboy bandaging his hands just killed me.

One none of you remember: The Jeno's Pizza Roll Commercial by the great Stan Freberg. Some background: Jeno's Pizza Rolls was using the Rossini William Tell Overture for its theme. At the same time, so was Lark cigarettes (yes, this was soooo long ago you could still advertise cigarettes on TV). The scene: a party. The hostess or host or caterer (it's been a long time) weaves through the crowd with a tray of Jeno's pizza rolls to the tune of the William Tell Overture. A hand clamps on this person's shoulder. He (or she) has been waylaid by a man pulling a cigarette out of a distinctive red pack (Larks were in a red pack) and he says in an ominous tone: "I've been meaning to talk to you about your theme song." Suddenly, a gloved hand clamps on cigarette man's shoulder and a familiar voice says: "I've been meaning to talk to you about the same thing." Camera pulls back to reveal...THE LONE RANGER! It was the original Lone Ranger too --Clayton Moore. Jay Silverheels as Tonto may have also been in the commercial.

Chuck, I've seen that one. I think it was on some type of Disck Clark retrospective, but it was darned funny.

u2 most definitely the best...
WORST? Aerosmith w/ nync, Brittany and (uggghhh) Nellie!

Hey, X, I met a student in your film program who said he couldn't wait until I came to speak. As you know, have dog-and-pony show and will travel, but it's the first I've heard of it. Just let me know when you want me.

Show at AGL is great, by the by. Tony Haigh and Adam Luckey doing fine, fine work.

I can only think of SNL parody commercials.

My fav is the one where Stevie Wonder advertises a Nikon camera. "So simple anyone can use it." He takes all kinds of out-of-focus shots. Hilarious!

Hey Chuck,
I am not teaching the film class (just the coordinator) and I've only met most of them once. I assume Arthur may have mentioned you at some point. I'll check with him to see what's up.

Theatre classes, film classes...I speak at any of them.

We'll chat!

BTW- I'm headed off to see PRIVATE EYES tonight at Studio. Anyone in shouting distance going there tonight?
I'll probably do EXITS next weekend.

Kudos to Bob S and the whole cast of PRIVATE EYES. Saw the show last night and was thoroughly entertained. Great work, gang, all the way around!

I thought last night's commercials were kind of lame. I did think the Career Builder LORD OF THE FLIES office parodies were clever. And some of the Doritos winners wer cute. The actress in the grocery store checkout line one was fabulous.

I thought Prince was great and Billy Joel was sad...I'm glad neither one got electrocuted...Prince's dancers in those heels spashing around, how brave...

Prince was probably the 2nd best halftime show ever (can you believe he covered a Foo Fighters song? WTF!!!) but I don't think anything can beat the post 9-11 U2 halftime show.

Right on, $...you might wind up back in Magnolia land!

Anonymous said...

Yeah I was refering to MS as Magnolia land...I forgot you now reside in Magnolia, AK...
Perhaps PINE BELT would've been more appropriate!

Been there, done that, D$...
Best of luck.

Just in off the boat; late on the thread. My fave Super Bowl commercial got low props from everyone else. Erin and I both loved the Kevin Federline "life comes at you fast" commercial. I thought it smoked everything else, including the Bud Crabs. Beer and animals again? When will it stop?

Fave commercial ever? This one (youtube link):

Watch your speaker volume at work on this one. And watch it ALL THE WAY through. Only 30 seconds.

Here's the Federline commercial I mentioned above...
